174 AUGUST 21 & 28, 1857 NEVADA JOURNAL
To the voters of Nevada County.
Having been nominated by the Republican County Convention as a candidate for the Senate
at the approaching election and as it is reported that I declined said nomination, and my
business prevented me from visiting the different precincts, I take this method of correcting
said report, and answering the many questions which are daily asked in reference to it.
Not knowing that I had been nominated until the day after the convention met, I was
eamestly solicited by my friends to accept it, which I did, conditionally, that I should be free to
vote and act according to my own judgment independent of party. I am not a member of any
political party, neither will I attach myself to any party and be compelled as is often the case to
vote for men without regard to character and reputation.
I have heretofore and shall hereafter vote for the best men, uninfluenced by party, believing
it to be the only sure way of correcting the many evils which now exist, and of bringing about
that reformation in the affairs of our government which so many desire & which all parties
promise before election. It is the strict adherence to party that has brought our State to its
present humiliating and bankrupt condition.
Had less attention been paid to party and more to men, a different and better state of things
would have been inaugurated long since. Thus I am before you, and without soliciting your
votes, have only to say that if you elect me I will exert myself to promote the best interests of
the county and State. Yours respectfully, W. J. TILLEY.
There still remains unpaid of indebtedness contracted by the State since January Ist, 1857, about
$60,000, not much of which will be paid before the last of October, at which time the County Treasurers
will pay in their quarterly instalments, unless Palmer, Cook & Co. pay the amount of the judgment against
them, in which event the State would not legally owe a dollar. The latter event, however, is almost too
improbable to contemplate, although they promised to do so on the date above named.

AMERICAN EXCHANGE.
THE above Hotel has changed hands and been fitted up in an elegant style. THE RESTAURANT, Has been
thoroughly renovated and altered in a manner which surpasses all other places in Nevada. THE BEDS, Are second to
none for cleanliness and comfort, all being entirely new. The proprietors hope by strict attention to business to
receive a full share of public patronage. PIERCE AND RICE, Proprietors.

Letter from Grass Valley.
GRASS VALLEY, Aug. 25th, 1857.
MR. EDITOR: During the present contest there is apparently a disposition to throw off the
shackles of party and from the multiplicity of candidates select those who have hitherto borne
the best characters for morality and ability.. . Of Mr. Tilley, as a public man, little is
known—the probability is he would make a good Senator. Ed. Burton everybody knows and
respects, and here it is my delightful task to step aside and offer my humble tribute to his
generous worth and nobility of mind.. When we look back upon his past political life, the
gratitude of a generous and free people, apart from political considerations it would seem,
should secure to him a hearty and honorable support.
