202 SEPTEMBER 18, 1857 NEVADA JOURNAL and Spring streets, the other for Main, Pine and Cayote streets. All pipes have to be connected as one system. Under the supposition that three one inch nozzles, throwing water to a perpendicular height of 70 feet being sufficient to extinguish any fire in this town, all other collateral conditions being given, we arrive at a diameter of eight inches for our main pipe, allowing 12 feet loss of pressure for contracted sections by deposits and air. The size of branch pipe connecting main pipe with fire plug is estimated at 4 inches. The pipe which carries water for the main pipes of three streets respectively for nine one inch nozzles has to be 12. As a matter of course a stream of water cannot be thrown to the same height in all parts of the town. In order to show the location of reservoir to be high enough for any part of the town, the following table is affixed, which contains the absolute fall from the water level of reservoir to the point mentioned, and the distance thereof: Location Total fall in feet Distance in feet Jesse Wall’s, at head of Broad st 42 750 Intersec. Broad & Commercial 67 1260 " " Pine 121 2030 Foot of Broad 157 2680 Intersec. Commercial & Pine 131 1955 " " Main 147 2330 Court House 87 1180 Cal. Stage Co.’s Stables 60 660 The reservoir is 50x50 feet by a depth of water of 15 feet, and contains 37,500 cubic feet or 234,000 gallons. This amount of water is consumed by 15 one inch nozzles in one hour and a half—the velocity of 80 feet at the nozzle is required to throw the stream 70 feet high. The distance between the fire plugs cannot be given a priori, as it chiefly depends upon the locality. The distance of 200 or 300 feet is too great. Based upon these data the preliminary estimate of cost can easily be made. The following is a summary of the cost of construction: Iron at 5 c. a pound delivered in Nevada....... $19,500 Reservoir, built of masonry............:c:eceeceee 10,000 Fire plugs and hose..........ccecceesesseeteeteeeseees 5,000 Workmanship, superintending, &C..........00 5,200 $40,000 Whether or not this arrangement of the hydraulic works is worth $40,000 let the public judge. It is very certain that there is no economy in risk. An excess of surety is far better than a deficiency. A PRACTICAL CIVIL ENGINEER. EXTRA NIGHT WATCH.—Papers have been circulated among our citizens and long lists of names obtained for a strong night police to guard the city till after the 9th of October. The threats which have found circulation, and the jail deliveries to which we have been subject have warned the people to be on the watch. There may be but little danger but it is wise to act with caution. A number of citizens from each street will alternately guard all the points liable to danger until after execution day has passed. Who is the editor of the Democrat? is a question of as difficult a solution as the celebrated inquiry “who struck Billy Patterson?” From the most reliable information to be gleaned on the subject the individual seems to be a myth. Sometimes he presents one phase, then another. Like Paddy’s flea, when you get your thumb on him, he is’nt there. . .. We sometimes learn confidentially that a certain individual, fair size, dark hair, soft spoken and supercilious is the editor, and get after him with a sharp stick, when another individual pops up behind us with a red head and challenges us to “take one of our size.” No sooner after him, than another larger chap, slouchy and humorous, is pointed out quoting scripture at our expense. We no sooner take a tack in that direction than a stately individual is said to indulge in
