208 OCTOBER 7, 1857 NEVADA DEMOCRAT Samuel King, formerly of Lowell, Mass., aged abut 32 years. Mr. King and another man named Wm. Quirk were engaged at blasting in the “Paradise Lost” bedrock tunnel, and while tamping, the accident occurred, instantly blowing the head of the former to atoms; also mutilating one of his hands and breaking an arm. Quirk miraculously escaped, in consequence of hearing the fuse igniting and dodging back, was only burned about the hands and face badly but not seriously. It is reported that King has left a wife and two children in the States, and to have been here since ’53. He is said to have been a very worthy man, and one of the most careful blasters in this section. TOWN TRUSTEES.—At a meeting of the Board of Trustees, on Thursday evening last, David Belden was elected Trustee, in place of W. P. Harrington, resigned. Mr. Jacob Kohlman, on the same evening, presented his resignation as a member of the Board. Since his election, Mr. Kohlman has well and faithfully discharged the duties of his office, and we regret that his private business renders it impossible for him to longer serve. The vacancy occasioned by his resignation will probably be filled at the regular meeting next Thursday evening. F. V. MOORE.—Next Friday is the day fixed for the execution of Frank Moore. The Sheriff has taken every precaution to prevent his escape or self-destruction, and unless something should occur against which it is impossible to provide, the sentence will be carried out. He has exhibited considerable nerve during his long confinement, but latterly has given up all hopes of escaping his fate. His wife has been allowed to visit him in his cell several times during the past few days. EYE GOUGED OUT.—Two men named Brown and Scotch Jimmy got into a fight on Sunday evening last, at Liberty Hill, in Little York township. They clinched and fell upon the ground, and after rolling and tumbling awhile, Brown sung out “enough.” Jimmy was immediately taken off, and as they got up Brown left one of his eyes on the ground, it having been gouged out in the scuffle. NEW YORK HOTEL.—Mr. George [Leippert], late of the U.S. Bakery, has purchased the above well-known and popular hotel, and will hereafter conduct the same. Mr. Lippert [sic] has had much experience in the hotel business, and we can cheerfully recommend the New York Hotel, under his supervision, to the traveling public. GLENBROOK RACE COURSE.—We learn that a subscription has been raised for the purpose of putting the Glenbrook race track in order. This is one of the best mile tracks in the State, and but a small outlay will be required to level the track, and have everything completed for the fall races. ASSOCIATE JUSTICES.—The newly elected Justices of the Peace of Nevada county, met in Convention at the Court House on Monday, and elected James Holland of Eureka township, and E. W. Spofford of Grass Valley, Associate Justice of the Court of Sessions, for the coming year. THE COURT OF SESSIONS, met in regular term, on Monday afternoon... . A venire for a Grand Jury was issued to the Sheriff, returnable on Thursday, and the Court adjourned until that day. COUNTY SUPERVISORS.—Messrs. I. H. Mitchell, B. B. Layton, and J. S. Wall, the newly elected County Supervisors, met and organized on Monday, by electing I. H. Mitchell President of the Board... .
