NEVADA JOURNAL JANUARY 30, 1857 21
robbed Mr. Frank Woodward on the Sugar Loaf, last fall. Another man has been arrested by the same
person, at Grass Valley, on suspicion of being the one who assisted Gehr in the robbery of McClanahan.
SAD AFFAIR.—On Monday last, Mr. Wm. Stafford was instantly killed, by a blow of the fist given
by Mr. Henry Hays. The affair took place near the head of Cayote street in this city, and
originated in a difficulty about a mining claim. Stafford was a young man of excellent
character, and well liked by all who knew him. Mr. Hays was arrested, and held to bail in the
sum of $5,000. He has lived in Nevada for a long time, and always stood well in the
community. It was one of those unfortunate quarrels in which the best of men will sometimes
find themselves involved, and we suppose Mr. Hays, when he gave the blow, never dreamed of
its terrible effect.
COMING UP.—In the year 1856, thirteen whale ships were owned and fitted out at Honolulu, H.I.,
for the whaling service. Four vessels will be added to the number this year. The tonnage of the whaling
vessels belonging to that port, will amount to 3419 tons. The capital invested will amount to $275,000.
COMPLETED.—On Wednesday the district court sat for the first time in the new court house. The
building is now completed, and is furnished with iron window shutters and a fire proof vault, thus
securing the records of the county from future destruction by fire. The District Attorney and Sheriff have
moved their offices into the new building.
ANOTHER ARREST.—On Monday last, Marshal Plumer arrested one Joseph Fisher a short
distance below Newtown, on a charge of stealing a horse and waggon belonging to Mr. Merker of
Sacramento. He claims that the property is his own.
FIRE COMPANY.—We notice by the Democrat that the Fire Company “is not dead but sleepeth.”
Why do not our property holders take some steps towards a protection against the terrible element that has
twice destroyed our city.
CHURCH SERVICE.—Hereafter, Rev. Mr. Cooper will preach at the new court house every
Sabbath at 11 A.M.
The sale of property on the delinquent tax list is adjourned to Monday next. Persons who have not
yet been sold out, have a last chance to save their property by paying up.
CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY.—An eloquent appeal of Dr. Bushnell to the citizens of this State in
behalf of the contemplated University was read a few evenings ago, at a meeting of the Board of Trustees
of the College of California. Dr. Bushnell is at present actively engaged in trying to effect the
establishment of an institution of learning, which shall be worthy of the State, and enable the youth of
California to acquire a complete education here. He has himself selected a site for the proposed
institution, near Napa. From the description he gives, it is a choice worthy of his judgment. . . .
