NEVADA DEMOCRAT NOVEMBER 4 & 11, 1857 237
popular hotel, formerly kept by S. W. Grush. Having been connected for some time with the
establishment, they will not suffer the reputation of the house to depreciate while in their keeping.
SCHOOL EXHIBITION.—The exhibition for the benefit of the public schools of Nevada, came off
last night at the Theater. A large number of tickets had been sold, and we doubt not a handsome sum was
realized for this praiseworthy object.
DANCING PARTY.—Messtrs. Holcomb & Grove have given out tickets for a party to come off at
the National Exchange to-morrow evening. An excellent supper will be prepared by Messrs. Pearson &
Healy.
BALL.—A ball, given by Mrs. Powers, comes off at Allison’s Ranch, near Grass Valley, to-morrow
evening.
SAM BRANNAN’S BANK.—We invite attention to the advertisement of this new banking house,
which has lately been established in San Francisco. It will be observed that real estate of the value of four
hundred and fifty thousand dollars has been deeded to trustees, to be held as security for the payment of
money that may be deposited in the bank. The real estate is situated in San Francisco, Sacramento, and
Sutter counties, and is unincumbered. Mr. Brannan is one of the few old Californians that has not met
with a reverse in business since the discovery of gold.
MARRIED. At Omega, Oct 13th, by Wm. Seaward, Justice of the Peace, MR. JAMES GALLOWAY
and MISS HARRIET SCHOOLING.
A DEAD BODY FOUND.—The dead body of a man, believed to be John Green, a Swede, was
found near Garden Bar, on Bear River, six miles above McCourtney’s crossing, a few days
since. An inquest was held by persons in the vicinity, who ascertained from testimony that
Green disappeared about a month since, was of intemperate habits, and subject to bleeding of
the lungs. It is supposed that he fell where his remains were found, from intoxication or
bleeding, and died alone and uncared for. Decomposition had gone so far that removal of the
remains was not attempted, but the earth was thrown upon them where they were
found.—Placer Herald, Oct. 31.

. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1857.
THE UTAH EXPEDITION.—We learn by a letter from Fort Leavenworth, dated the 19th,
that Secretary Hartnett left Leavenworth, on the afternoon of that day with the baggage wagons
to join the expedition to Utah, which had preceded him a day or two. The force under Col.
Johnson does not exceed two thousand men, but is well provided with everything to make the
march a pleasant one.—St. Louis Dem. 23d.
The Financial Crisis in the East.
The financial crisis which was raging in the Eastern States at last advices is attributed to
