NEVADA DEMOCRAT NOVEMBER 18, 1857 241 tree, at Gold Flat, last Wednesday night. a large pine tree was standing near their cabin, and as the wind was blowing very hard that evening, they were fearful that the tree might fall. While talking on the subject they heard the tree cracking, and both jumped to get out, and arrived at the door at the same time. Luckily the door was not wide enough for two men to pass out abreast, and on the instant both started for another door; they had scarcely turned, when the tree came down directly in front of the door from which they had first attempted to escape. Had they succeeded in getting out, both would have been killed. SCHOOL CHILDREN.—We learn from Mr. Chittenden, who has recently taken the census, that there are 287 school children in Nevada township—of whom 146 are boys and 141 are girls. Last year, according to the census taken by Mr. Gregory, there were 300 children in the township between the ages of four and eighteen years—151 boys and 149 girls. From this comparison we judge the census has not been taken as thoroughly this year as it was last, for certainly the school children of the township have not decreased during the year. ATTEMPT AT ROBBERY.—As Mr. John Greenbanks who lives at Pleasant Flat, was returning home on horseback, from Nevada, on Saturday evening, two men suddenly jumped out in front of him, one from each side of the road, and one of them caught hold of the bridle. Greenbanks immediately put spurs to his horse, jerked the fellow down, and got clear. He had proceeded but a few steps, when a pistol was fired at him, the bullet passing through his hat, and grazing his hair. DEPUTY MARSHALL.—Mr. Elijah [Tompkins] has been appointed Deputy Marshall [sic] of the city, and the appointment was confirmed by the Board of Trustees last Thursday evening. GREAT FIRE AT CHICAGO.—-A fire occurred at Chicago which destroyed property to the amount of $600,000 on which there was insurance of about $300,000. Four men were buried beneath the ruins of the buildings and it was feared that others had met with the same fate. NEVADA BAKERY!! No. 21 MAIN STREET NEVADA. BREAD FOR ALL NATIONS!!!
