4 JANUARY 14 & 21, 1857 NEVADA DEMOCRAT
..It is further ordered that Henry Meredith Esq., be employed as assistant Counsel on the part of the County of
Nevada..
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 1857 .
AFFRAY.—A fracas occurred on Sunday evening last, at the Mountaineer Saloon, on Commercial
street, between John Leonard and Wm. Murray, which resulted in Leonard stabbing Murray, inflicting a
severe, but not dangerous wound, near the pit of the stomach. after being stabbed, Murray ran some two
or three hundred yards to Pine street, and fell, being exhausted from loss of blood. He was soon taken up
and cared for. The parties were both intoxicated at the time the difficulty occurred. Leonard was arrested
and examined before Justice Anderson, on Monday, and held to bail in the sum of $300, for his
appearance before the Court of Sessions. He was afterwards committed to jail in default of bail.
BODY FOUND.—The body of a man was found on Friday last, in the Snow Mountain Ditch, about
six miles above this place. The water was about twenty inches deep in the ditch, and the body
was lying on the bottom. The only thing about him by which he could be identified, was a
declaration of intention to become a citizen of the United States, signed Thomas Burke, and
dated New York City, April 14th, 1851. His pantaloons were partly drawn off, but there were
no marks of violence on his person, and it is supposed that he got lost during the late storm,
and perished from cold and fatigue. Coroner Grimes, on being notified of the fact, took charge
of the body, and buried it near the spot where it was found.
ANOTHER BODY FOUND.—The body of a man was found about a week ago, one mile above
Hoit’s bridge on the other side of the Yuba. The man had evidently been dead five or six
months. From appearances, it is believed that he was murdered, as there was a hole found in
his skull just back of the left ear, which was undoubtedly made by a bullet, and the body had
been thrown into a ravine and covered with rocks and brush. There was nothing about the body
by which it could be identified. He had on a thick blue coat, duck pantaloons, and a pair of
heavy miner’s boots.
INFORMATION WANTED.—During the past three years we have, on several occasions, received
letters from persons in the Atlantic States, making anxious inquiries in regard to men whom we saw every
day in the streets. We have heretofore merely handed the letters to the persons inquired for, and advised
them to write to their friends. The last letter of the kind which we received, is from Mr. Wm. P. Barker, of
Bellows Falls, Vermont, making inquiries for Harvey, David, Milton and Charles Barker. Now, we have
not seen either of these men for over a week, but presume some of them are still living at Barker’s Ranch,
a few miles from this place, and if this paragraph should meet the eye of either of them, we hope they will
not fail to write to their friends by the next steamer, and relieve their anxieties.
ACCIDENT.—Wnm. Richards was severely injured yesterday, at Gold Flat, by falling into a ditch.
He had a load of lumber on his shoulder, which fell upon him and bruised him severely. His injuries,
however, are not considered dangerous.
THEATER.—We understand that the Nevada Theater will be opened again in about a week. Mr.
Fleming and Mrs. Estelle Potter are expected to appear.
MINSTRELS.—The Nevada Minstrel Troupe gave entertainments at the Theater on Saturday and
