NEVADA DEMOCRAT MARCH 18 & 25, 1857 57 his diggings on Manzanita Hill. While standing on the bank the ground suddenly caved, and carried him to the bottom of the cut, a distance of sixty or seventy feet. He had the presence of mind to jump back, as soon as the cave started, and thus kept on top of the falling earth. One of his legs was badly bruised, but otherwise he was not much hurt. OROVILLE.—The steamer Sam Soule made the trip to Oroville on Friday last, without meeting any obstructions. The steamer will hereafter run to that place as a regular packet. CHINAMAN SHOT.—On Wednesday last, at Dutch Ravine, Placer county, George World being on the watch, caught a Chinaman in the act of robbing a sluice box, and shot him in the neck and leg, though he did not kill him. The thief was captured and is now in jail charged with grand larceny. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 1857. FATAL ACCIDENT.—Mr. James McCain was killed on Monday, the 23d inst at Butte Flat, near Rough & Ready, by the caving of a bank under which he was working at the time. He lived about thirty minutes after he was taken out. He was buried yesterday by the Masonic Fraternity of Rough & Ready. The deceased was from Pennsylvania, and has a family living in that State. WILLOW MINING COMPANY.—This company have recently completed a ditch to bring water to their claims from the Snow Mountain ditch, and are now putting in a hose for the purpose of running a cut into the hill. The ground has been well prospected, and to all appearances, the company have a “good thing.” Their claims are supposed to be located upon the same lead which passes through Manzanita Hill, and the ground between the two places, a distance of two and a half miles, will, doubtless, some day be worked to advantage. THEATRICAL.—The Robinson Family performed at the Nevada Theater, on Monday and Tuesday evenings. We were not present to witness the entertainments, but understand they were very poorly attended. We announced last week on the authority of Mr. Frisbie, that Mr. McDonough, and the talented company which has recently been playing in Marysville, were to appear at this place, on Monday evening last. We notice, however, that this company have taken the American Theater at Sacramento, which they were to open last evening. We judge from this, that Mr. McDonough has made other arrangements, and will not appear here for some time. VARIOLOID.—Several cases of varioloid have occurred in Nevada within the past few days. Three of Mr. Womack’s children, and a little son of Waldo M. Allen are now confined with this disease. TYPHOID FEVER.—Several cases of typhoid fever have been reported in the last few days, in this place. ECLIPSE.—According to the almanacs there will be a partial eclipse of the sun this afternoon. The eclipse will commence at Nevada, about ten minutes before three o’clock, and nearly one half of the sun will be observed. The eclipse will be total in the southern hemisphere.
