Stabbing at Humbug.—A ball came off at Humbug on Saturday evening last, in the course of which
a difficulty arose between John Enders and a German that resulted in the former receiving a
frightful wound in the abdomen with a knife. The difficulty had its origin in liquor, but the
exact truth in relation to the affair we cannot at present determine, as the statements of parties
are conflicting. The German came to Nevada on the following morning and surrendered
himself to the Sheriff. Enders was supposed to be mortally wounded at first, but we learn he is
in a fair way to recover. The German, whose name is Louis Goldberg, had an examination
before Justice [John] Anderson on Wednesday, and was admitted to bail in the sum of $5,000.
Since the above was written we learn that Enders died on Wednesday at noon. We also learn
that the wound was over the liver, near the seventh and eighth rib.
On and after next Sabbath, January 3d, 1858, the Congregational Church and Society will worship
in the Brick Church. The public are invited to attend. Hours of service 10 1/2 o’clock, A. M. and 3 P. M.
Sabbath School will also be held in the same place every Sabbath at 2 o’clock P. M.
Lectures at Grass Valley.—A course of Lectures will be delivered before the Young Men’s Literary
Association at Grass Valley, by A. A. Sargent, D. Belden, Esqs. Rev. Mr. [Martin] Kellogg, Dr. [Edward]
Tompkins, Judge [James] Walsh and others. The course will commence January 12th, to be followed up,
one lecture a week. Sargent opens the course, and is followed by Belden. Subjects the same as at this
place.
THEATRE.—Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Conner will give an entertainment at the Theatre on Monday night
next. We would again remind our citizens of the signal service rendered them by Mr. & Mrs. Conner
when the fire laid their homes in ashes.
LOLA MONTEZ AND HER SLANDERERS.—In a letter written to the editor of the Philadelphia
Press, Lola Montez says:
To the thousand malicious falsehoods which have been published against me, I have never
replied, it being my determination to leave the events of my life to History, while I leave my
calumniators to that God who has ordained an especial act for the punishment of “all liars,”
and who, if the Bible be a true book, will find the next world a good deal hotter than they have
made this one to me.
