presentation speech in his usual style and was responded to by the donee [sic] in a substantial manner.
John knows how to keep a livery stable.
[Robert] Legg, who attempted to kill his wife was brought before Justice Smith and examined.
On failure to give $1,500 bonds to await the action of the Grand Jury, on a charge of assault to commit
murder, he was remanded to jail.
Professors Valentine and Bushell will give one of their grand performances at Grass Valley tomorrow evening. They have met with great success at every place they have visited. They will appear
here during the week.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 1863
A Chinese woman was found a few days since, near Kelsey’s ravine, almost in a state of nudity
with her head badly cut. Policeman Scott took her to Chinatown and ordered the half brutes to dress her
wound, clothe and feed her. The Johns’ promised well. “Me sabe; me fede, me clothe, me take welly good
care,” and commenced dressing her up in style in the presence of the officer. A day or two elapsed and
Marshal Davidson found her worse off that [sic] she was when first discovered, perambulating round in
the ravine. He took her back and told Mr. Chinaman that if she was found again he would bag the whole
of Chinatown. This frightened the Celestials and they are taking good care of her. They grumble mightily
at this procedure and say:—’One Chinaman buy woman $60, swindle, no good, you shabe, he no likee
her, she all timme sickee, no good one bittee. Himpo, shabe, me backen was tupo. Ho kim ka kum me
sinda.”
STABBING AFFAIR AT GRASS VALLEY.—We learn that a man named Little was stabbed in two
places by his brother-in-law, J. B. Bledsoe, on Saturday night last. The particulars as far as we are able to
learn are as follows. Bledsoe was abusing his wife, when her brother, Mr. Little, came in and interfered,
whereupon B. pulled a knife out and stabbed him twice in the side. The wounds are not dangerous.
Bledsoe has not been arrested.
DISTRICT COURT, Jan 12th—Gilham vs. McCharles and wife, demurrer to complaint overruled and
defendants given one week to plead.
[Helen A.] Spoor vs. [Charles H.] Spoor, judgment for plaintiff—decree of divorce granted.
Baldwin vs. Young. John McArthur substituted as plaintiff.
Head et al vs. Parr et al, verdict for plaintiffs—damages $200.
We understand that Eugene Soggs has received the appointment to the Naval Academy at Newport,
R.I. He will leave this city in a few days to take his place in that institution.
Jim Jeffery has taken his old stand, on Broad street, opposite the Union Hotel where he will always
be found with a fine stock of liquors and cigars on hand.
For the benefit of our readers we would state that Gov. Nye, of Nevada Territory has appointed Hon.
Niles Searls, of this city, Commissioner [of Deeds] for that Territory.
