12 JANUARY 13, 15, 16, 1863 NEVADA TRANSCRIPT Davis examine the wound, who found it to be about half an inch in length on the surface, extending in about one inch, when it struck a rib and glanced upwards about two inches. Little is in considerable pain, but his wound is not considered dangerous. Bledsoe remained about town until satisfied that John was not in danger of dying from the wound, and he then took the stage, Monday morning, for Sacramento or as far perhaps, as his limited finances would permit him to journey. C. Randolph has purchased the stock and trade of C. W. Young, and will continue business at the old stand on Commercial street. . .. There is not a steadier or more high minded gentleman in this community than Mr. Randolph. SACRAMENTO, Jan. 14. The vote on the Senatorial caucus to-night, on the last ballot, was Sargent 34, Phelps 38, Conness 22. A gain to Sargent of 15 since last night. The world [renowned] Professors Valentine and Bushell have consented to remain one more night. Let every one that can, go and see them this evening in their wonderful performance. FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 1863 MURDERERS AND ROBBERS UNDER SENTENCE OF DEATH.—The Sacramento Union says: George Smith arrived on Tuesday last in this city, where he formerly resided, overland from Lewiston, W.T. He brings intelligence that Mayfield, who killed Sheriff Blackburn some time since in Nevada Territory, and Henry Plummer [sic], who killed one Vedder in Nevada, are, with two other murderers, under sentence of death by a people’s Court in that place for robbing and killing one Murky about seven or eight weeks ago, as he was going to Lewiston from Oregon. Murky was jerked off his horse by the murderers with a lariat, and his head was found separated from his body about twenty-five paces distant. The purse of the murdered man, containing over $600, was found in the possession of Mayfield, and his boots were worn by Plummer. Smith says Mayfield wounded three men before he was captured, and was finally brought to bay by a big Missourian, who suddenly leveled a rifle at him and brought him to a stand, when he was seized from behind and pinioned. By this time the four murderers have probably been brought to suffer the penalty of their crimes. The following is a list of Senators and Assemblymen who voted in the Union caucus for Hon. A. A. Sargent, for United States Senator, on the last ballot, on Tuesday evening, the [13th]: SENATORS. J. C. Birdseye & Joseph Kurtz [sic] of Nevada. Newton Booth of Sacramento. G. B. Oulton, of Siskiyou.
