NEVADA TRANSCRIPT JANUARY 16 & 17, 1863 13 O. B. Powers, of Solano and Yolo. W. Van Dyke, of Humboldt, Klamath and Del Norte. ASSEMBLYMEN. W. H. Sears, Jas. Collins, Seth Martin and J. W. Rule, of Nevada. N. W. Blanchard, of Placer. S. C. Whipple, of Humboldt. Thos. J. Butler, Colusa and Tehama. Jas. W. Crawford, of Sierra. J. G. Moore, of Butte. Samuel Meyers, San Joaquin. J. C. Sargent and O. F. Redfield, of Yuba. BOLD ROBBERY.—The clothing store of H. Levy, under the TRANscrRIPT office was robbed on Wednesday night of a large number of pants, coats, boots and $195 in coin. The following are the particulars as far as we are able to gather them: Mr. Levy and brother who were sleeping in the back part of their store, were aroused by a noise, whereupon they lit a candle and discovered that the back door of the store had been opened. After closing the door they went to sleep and did not wake until seven o’clock yesterday morning. Upon opening the store they discovered that a large amount of goods had been taken. The robbers entered by the back door and passed directly by the bed in which the Levy’s [sic] were sleeping. The trunk from which the money was taken was within three feet of the bed. It seems somewhat singular that the proprietor of the store did not watch after having discovered that the door had been forced open once. The Marshal found 31 pairs of pants, 8 hats and 12 pairs of boots hid under houses on China street. No further trace has yet been found of the robbers. SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 1863 The Marysville Appeal says the Senatorial caucus was in session an hour and a half, on Thursday evening, 101 being present—Howell, of Plumas, having returned, who voted for Sargent. Seven votes were taken, without material difference from Wednesday night. The last vote stood—Phelps 37, Sargent 34, Conness 22, Brown 5, Shafter 1. On the second vote, Sargent tied Phelps at 35. BIRTH. In this city, on the 15th inst., to the wife of Solomon Rosenthal, a daughter. ALMOST CAPTURED.—Marshall [sic] Davidson and Under Sheriff Potter were at the Theatre on Thursday night, enjoying hugely the entertainment of Profs. Valentine and Bushell, when a messenger arrived almost out of breath and informed these conservators of the peace that Burke, the notorious murderer and escaped convict, was held in “durance vile” at the Hotel de Paris by a number of citizens. The officers, anxious to secure the bird, hastened to the hotel. They found a number of persons around the place with shooting irons bearing on the house. The besiegers had Burke sure. Marshall Davidson entered the hotel and found it occupied by Chauval [sic], the cook and a Frenchman, who was sitting in a chair near the stove, reading the Echo du Pacifique, totally unconscious of the fact that he had been the cause of so much excitement in town. The Marshall left the scene wondering by what kind of process the imagination could picture Burke in the man before him. COMMITTED.—Timothy Ryan was committed to the County jail yesterday, upon the charge of assault with an attempt to commit murder. He was sent up by a justice at Grass Valley. The case will come up before the next Grand Jury.
