TRACKS OF “THE PATH FINDER.”—A letter dated “Dutch Flat and Donner Lake Wagon Road, first crossing of the Yuba,” says: “The camp at which we are now stationed is but about half a mile from the spot at which Fremont’s party were stopped in the winter of 1843, and some of the tamarack timber felled by them at that time is still quite sound.” WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1863 MAN STABBED.—A man named McCarty, a miner who lived at Sweetland was stabbed and killed at North San Juan, on Sunday evening, in the street in front of Morgan’s saloon. The evidence given at the inquest, which was had on Monday before Justice Holt went to show that the stabbing was done by one Casey, who from the nature of the wounds must have been walking by the side of his victim when the deed was done. The first wound was inflicted at the top of the shoulder blade and was a large cut. The second and last stab entered the lower part of the heart. McCarty died almost instantly. Casey has not been caught. He was in company with another man of his kind when the deed was done. Casey is considered a desperate man, and the stabbing was probably owing to an old grudge. The funeral of McCarty was to take place yesterday at Grass Valley. Br. Byrne [of the Grass Valley National] announces his intention to vote for McFarland and Niles today. That’s right but he ought not to make two bites of the thing, but go the whole Union ticket. FOR REESE RIVER! Passengers of Light Freight Wanted for Reese River! Apply immediately to H. C.
