174 DECEMBER 23, 24, 25, 1863 NEVADA TRANSCRIPT WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1863 [After the churches announced they would not be able to provide a Christmas tree for the children, because only the Brick church had survived the fire and it was being used for many purposes (including District Court sessions), Editor Waite called on the community to provide one by whatever means possible. The following notice appeared as a consequence:] Christmas Tree—The parents of all children in the city, and all others interested, are invited to unite with the Committee in their efforts to provide for the enjoyment of the little ones, on next Thursday evening at Temperance Hall. All who can will please come to the hall on Wednesday evening, for the purpose of arranging and trimming it. All presents should be sent to the Hall on Thursday, by 2 o’clock, P.M., marked in a legible hand. A committee will be in attendance all day to receive them. The exercises will commence on Thursday evening at 6 o’clock, punctually. COMMITTEE OF ARRANGEMENTS. DISTRICT COURT.—The court was occupied yesterday in the trial of [Terrance] Smith for the murder of [Michael] Daley at Mohawk Flat some months since. E. H. Gaylord District Attorney, appears for the prosecution, and G. L. Waters and D. Belden for the defense. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1863 THE CHRISTMAS TREE.—Quite a number of persons have expressed a desire to contribute for the purchase of presents for the Christmas Tree. A committee, consisting of M. S. Deal, M. McAra and Sayres will receive contributions and see that they are properly distributed. We are requested to state that it is desirable that all contributions for the tree be handed in this forenoon. Parents, who can, are requested to furnish presents for their children unless they are aware that they will otherwise be provided for. But children of all classes are invited to be present, because an effort will be made to make them all happy. It is expected that enough will be contributed that no child will go away dissatisfied. The jury in the case of Smith for the killing of Daley at Mohawk Flat, returned a verdict on Tuesday night of “murder in the second degree.” Cap. [Frank] Waller was on trial yesterday, in the District Court, for the killing [of Richard] Hodge at Grass Valley. RESIGNED.—James Monro tendered his resignation as one of the City Board of Trustees on Monday night. The Grass Valley National says Mrs. [Caroline] A. Frisbie, of Carson City, who is on a visit to that place, met with a painful accident, a few days since, while going from Nevada to Grass Valley. She was thrown from a buggy, and had one arm put out of place. The damaged limb was promptly adjusted and she is now getting along remarkably well. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1863 NOT DEFUNCT.—A letter from Jack Gamble has been received in town which seems to deny the report that Jack is dead. Jack says he is first officer in command of the Ottawa before Charleston.
