2 JANUARY 14, 1863 NEVADA JOURNAL brethren in the West India Islands. The 1st of Jan., 1863, will mark an epoch in the world’s history. From that day humanity began a freer and more unfettered march than heretofore. FUN AT THE THEATRE.—Professors Valentine and Bushell will give one of their amusing and instructive entertainments at the Metropolitan this evening. Experiments in Electro-Biology, or mesmerism, will be given; also, Electricity will be used to propel a train of miniature railroad cars, this showing the wonder power of this invisible but all pervading agent. Spirit rappings will be introduced, not from the “vasty deep,” we presume, but by the aid of electricity. Table-tipping and the “dancing of furniture” with all the “modern improvements” may be witnessed. THE writer of the following, is an old and experienced Teacher. We leave him to present his own views, only saying, that there are some points in the article worthy of the serious consideration of all the friends of Education. JANUARY 5th, 1763 [sic] That our public schools have hitherto been held in disrepute, though lamentable, is to be admitted. But that a new era in our “school system,” in this place, under the present supervision, to be continued and improved, is no less gratifying than true. The different departments of the public school, have recommenced their session, after the holiday vacation, and we hope with the assistance, and encouragement of every lover of the intellectual progress of the community in which we live. We are asked, why should we give encouragement to the public, in preference to private schools? (which we perceive are to be continued by the gentlemanly teachers who preside over them.) We answer, the reasons are numerous. First, .. . the same as in any other great public undertaking. “United we stand. Divided we fall.” If all the appropriations, funds, collections, donations, taxes, and payments for tuition &c., are directed in one channel, to one purpose, for the benefit of a//, it is far better than that these interests shall be divided and distracted. The price of tuition is to be continually lessened by this systematic concentration, while the condition and character of the school is to be continually elevated; and at the same time the means, and facilities for instruction, such as globes, maps, apparatus &c., are to be concentrated and improved. Again, in the systemized classification, which can only be effectual by a combined effort, the benefit is incalculable; and can only be truly appreciated, by those who have seen its beneficial results. This is the great advantage that cities, towns and villages have over sparsely populated districts. But of what profit will be this advantage, if the inhabitants instead of availing themselves of it, allow the district to be cut up into private schools without classification or gradation? ... What would you think of a company, who would undertake, by private enterprise, to benefit themselves by running a rail-road side by side with the Great Pacific Highway. In demonstration of the above, written in regard to the public, contrasted with private schools, the comparison is just, save that the disparity in the latter case, is greater than in the former.... PHILOMATH. ATLANTIC CABLE.—Late reports of this great enterprise are of a very encouraging character. Cyrus Field is prosecuting the enterprise with unwavering vigilance. EMANCIPATION CELEBRATION.—The colored citizens of Nevada county, desirous of expressing their heartfelt thanks to Almighty god and gratitude to his excellency Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, for proclaiming freedom to nearly four millions of their brethren in
