this city for safe keeping. A gentleman of San Juan, who asserts that he has known the captive for four
years, and that he never was in jail in Sierra county, came here on Thursday evening, and sued out a writ
of habeas corpus, intending to procure the Chinaman’s release on the ground of mistaken identity; but he
delayed to serve the writ until yesterday morning, and when he went to do it found the prisoner was gone
to Downieville in charge of an officer.
INAUGURATION DAY.—The following citizens have agreed to close their several places of
business to-day, between the hours of 10 o’clock A.M. and 4 o’clock P.M., in honor of the recent National
victories and the Inauguration of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States for a second term:

BORN. In this city, on the 4th inst., to the wife of A. Haas, a son.
FOR STOCKTON.—On Saturday evening an insane man named Arthur Connor, a native of
Ireland, was brought over from San Juan and lodged in jail. Yesterday an examination was held, and an
order for his commitment to the Insane Asylum was issued by Judge Niles. He will be taken below this
morning.
SERIOUS STABBING AFFAIR.—At Lake City on Friday evening two men, named White and
Barton were gambling in a saloon, when a quarrel arose between them, which ended in White stabbing
Barton three times—ain the breast, belly and arm. The wounds are supposed to be mortal. White made his
escape.
SOCIAL PARTY.—On Monday evening next Mrs. Blum will give a social party at Temperance
Hall, to which a general invitation is extended. Mrs. Blum has a happy faculty of getting up pleasant
parties, and her efforts will doubtless prove successful on this occasion. See advertisement.
PAINFUL ACCIDENT.—On Friday last, as we learn from the Grass Valley Union, Henry Smith
met with a terrible accident while edging boards with a circular saw at Dr. Sheet’s old sawmill. His right
hand was caught by a piece of edging and thrown forward upon the saw by which every finger was torn
off and the thumb fearfully lacerated.
