GRASS VALLEY UNION MARCH 21 & 22, 1865 165 CALICO PARTY. TIGER H. L. AND B., COMPANY, NO. 1 WILL GIVE A CALICO PARTY, AT HAMILTON HALL, GRASS VALLEY, MONDAY, MAY Ist, 1865. MANAGERS: A. G. COMPTON, R. FLANDERS, J. R. STEBBINS, FLOOR MANAGERS: W.S.BYRNE, F.CLEVELAND A.HOOPER I. WILLIAMSON, J. LANCASTER. A General Invitation is Extended. TICKETS, $5. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22, 1865 THE GRASS VALLEY DAILY UNION OFFICE has been removed to Mill Street, Opposite Smith & Ross’ Drug Store. IGNORED.—The Grand Jury of Storey county has ignored the charge of murder against John E. Doyle, for the killing of Benjamin Metcalf, in Doyle & Goodman’s saloon, Virginia, a short time since. NEW STEAMER.—The new steamer which is now being built by the California Steam Navigation Company for the Sacramento river, will be larger than either the Yosemite or Chrysopolis. She will be ready for service for the Fall trade. It has been reported that she would be christened the Pacific, the Sacramento, and several other names. AN Agricultural and Mechanical College is about to be established under State patronage in Washoe county, Nevada, for which purpose there has been fifty acres of very valuable land donated. J. C. SARGENT has been relieved from the command of the refractory juveniles for whom the State maintains a Reform School at Marysville. Probably the young scallywags need something more than a Sergeant to enforce proper discipline. SOCIAL GATHERING.—The ladies of the Methodist Episcopal Church in this place will hold another of their social gatherings at the Parsonage, on Church street, this evening, to which they cordially invite all their friends, without respect to sex or denomination. The objects of these meetings are—first, a more general and intimate acquaintance, and secondly, to raise funds for the repairing and furnishing of the Parsonage—for which purpose a collection will be taken up. TRAVELING AGENT.—Mr. Elhyder Hammond starts out to-day for the purpose of canvassing this county on behalf of the Grass Valley UNION. We have completed arrangements by which we shall be enabled to make the UNION a first class newspaper, and we hope that the citizens of Nevada will second our efforts in this respect. The county will be thoroughly canvassed by Mr. Hammond, and we commend him to the friendly offices of our friends. Mr. H. has also the agency for Greely’s “American Conflict,” which is a very meritorious work and one that should commend itself to every one who takes any interest in that trying crisis through which our country in now passing.
