174 APRIL 5, 1865 NEVADA GAZETTE The following dispatches were published in yesterday’s Union: SAN FRANCISCO. April 3—A dispatch from the operator at Omaha, received by Carpentier at 5:30 P.M. says: Before the line went down between here and Chicago, I received a dispatch from Chicago as follows: “Richmond is taken, with hundreds of guns and many thousands of prisoners. Petersburg was evacuated.” The city is wild with excitement. Flags are being hoisted everywhere. JUBILANT EXCITEMENT.—Between eight and nine o’clock on Monday night the announcement was made in town that Richmond had been captured, with a large number of guns and prisoners, and that Petersburg was also in our possession. At first many persons thought it was a hoax, but an appeal to the telegraph operator satisfied them that it was very probably, if not absolutely certain; and then there was an overflowing of corked-up enthusiasm, etc., very cheering to behold. Blaze illuminated his premises in a brilliant manner; the military band of the Light Guard discoursed patriotic airs on the balcony of the armory; every man met his neighbor “smilingly,” and there was a general hands-shaking [sic] and exchange of patriotic congratulations. . . . LET IT BE DONE.—It is proposed to have a grand celebration to-night in honor of the great victory. Let it be done. A committee of citizens should take action on the subject immediately. If the wind does not abate, let another evening be selected for the celebration. DISTRICT COURT—MARCH TERM—HON. T. B. MCFARLAND PRESIDING.—This Court met yesterday morning, when the following business was transacted: The People vs. Richard Kneale—Tried and submitted to the jury at 5 o’clock P.M. In about half an hour the jury dame in with a verdict of “Guilty of manslaughter,’ and were discharged. THE trial of Robert and Josiah Dodge for the murder of Mark P. Hammock will commence in the District Court to-day. COUNTY SCHOOL FUND.—The County Superintendent reports the following apportionment of the County School Fund to the various districts, at the rate of $2 38 to each child. The moneys drawn upon the unapportioned fund are to be deducted from the amounts herein named. A full statement for each District will be given in a few days: Districts No. Children Am’t Appor.
