NEVADA TRANSCRIPT APRIL 16, 1865 199
didn’t believe the report and made the remark in a joking way. A crowd of excited persons soon collected
around him and there was every indication at one time that violence would be done.
POSTPONED.—The anniversary ball of the Light Guard is postponed for one week on account of
the death of the President.
SENTENCE OF DODGE.—Robert Dodge was yesterday sentenced by his honor T. B. McFarland,
to be hung on the 2d day of June next, for the murder of Mark P. Hammock, committed at Allison Ranch.
... When asked if he had any reason to offer why sentence should not be passed upon him, his counsel,
Judge Belden, made a formal motion for a new trial which was overruled by the Court and exceptions
taken. .. . During the whole time the prisoner was stoical, and when remanded to the custody of the
Sheriff, went back to his cell as cheerful as though he were going to a feast. We doubt if such coolness
was ever exhibited as that which has characterised the conduct of Robert Dodge from the time of his
arrest up [to] the time sentence of death was pronounced.
