GRASS VALLEY UNION APRIL 29 & 30, 1865 229
ever published in the State, I am naturally a little suspicious of him. “Let those who live in glass
houses should not throw stones [sic],” is a proverb to which I would call his attention.
VINDEX.
GLENBROOK RACE TRACK.—The Glenbrook Race Track is now in splendid condition, and our
friend Charley Osborne informs us that those who are desirous can now have an opportunity of trying
it. All the rocks have been removed from the track, the short turns improved and the course made level.
Now that the pleasant season of the year is at hand, and the road to the track being good, we have no
doubt that our people will take advantage of the excellent drive to Charley’s course and try the bottom of
their “fast nags.” We underestand that the Glenbrook will be open in a few days to the public.
SUNDAY, APRIL 30, 1865
The Meeting on Friday Night.
On the streets yesterday we heard general complaint of some of the nominations made by the
meeting on Friday night for Trustees. Whose fault was it that men objectionable to the Union party
were placed in nomination? Why the fault of the Union men themselves. We cautioned, implored and
counselled them to attend the meeting and place good men in nominaton for the positions to be filled.
The majority of them absented themselves, and those Union men who felt it their duty to be there were
outnumbered by the opposing party. When the harm has been done, then come these Union men who
neglected to perform their duty, and utter their growls. We are powerless to help them. . . .
THE GRASS VALLEY UNION.—This paper whose sterling loyalty, under the present
management, makes it worthy of the name it bears, has entered upon its second volume. When
first started it came near becoming the victim of treachery, and for some time the paper was
badly managed. But since it came into the hands of the present owners, it has steadily grown to
be a favorite of loyal men. The local columns are greatly improved and we are pleased to notice
evidences of prosperity in the increased advertising patronage. May the UNION live long and
increase in prosperity—Transcript.
We feel grateful to the Transcript for the above flattering notice. as long as we publish the Union, it
shall continue to be worthy the name it bears. And so long as we have the good wishes of such sterling
papers as the Transcript, we are not afraid of being injured by snarling whelps.
