NEVADA TRANSCRIPT MAY 4 & 5, 1865 259
THURSDAY, MAY 4, 1865
MARRIED. In this city, at the National Exchange Hotel, by Rev. D. A. Dryden, Mr. Frank H. Fisher
to Miss Fanny Berry.
TO THE OFFICERS OF THE SOLDIER’S AID SOCIETIES, NEVADA COUNTY.—I am about making
a rapid tour through your county, for the purpose of saving such Societies as may be languishing
and in need of assistance. We hope and believe the war is nearly ended. But the hospitals are
full of men, sick and wounded, who must be cared for at least six months after the last battle
is fought. The funds of the United States. Sanitary Commission are expended with the most
studious regard to strict economy; the expenses of distribution have never yet reached five per
cent. of the amount contributed. But our supplies are running low and there is pressing need of
Sanitary work. I do not propose to visit any Societies where it may not be really necessary or
profitable to do so.
Officers of Societies who feel that a day or an evening spent with them would be of material
advantage, can confer with me, by letter or otherwise, at Grass Valley on Saturday, May 6th, or
at Nevada city, Monday May 8th. [Rev. J. H. Chapin]
THE [James] Hoel property was disposed of yesterday at auction as per announcement. The Garden
Cottage was purchased by Pedro Sciutti for $800, and the vacant lots, adjoining the Pennsylvania Engine
Co’s House, by Wm. Bacigalupi for $215.
FRIDAY, MAY 5, 1865
MARRIED. In Sebastopol, May Ist, by Rev. H. Richardson, Mr. Thomas L. Frew to Miss Mary C.,
daughter of John Powell, Esq.
THE windows, doors, &c, of the Orphan Asylum now being built in Grass Valley, are being made in
this city, at the factory of W. C. Stiles.
COUNTY COURT, May 4th.—John Buckley admitted to citizenship.
The Grass Valley Union of yesterday says:
We were shown at the banking house of Thos. Findley & Co., several very fine lumps of pure
gold, taken from the claim of Greenwell Brothers, near Neese & West’s cement claim in You
Bet. The gold shown us is from tailings principally, and is the result of about four week’s work.
The lumps are valued at $3,000. We also saw a splendid chunk of gold from the Lucky mine, the
proceeds of thirty-three tons of rock. The rock from which the gold was taken averaged $36 per
ton, although the owners had no idea of its showing such a profitable result.
THE CASE OF MR. PEIRSOL.—The case of J. C. Peirsol came before the Board of Examination
on Wednesday evening, and his certificate was annulled on the ground that his conduct in excluding
compositions containing loyal sentiments was unprofessional. The evidence showed that previous to this
act and also subsequent thereto, Mr. Piersol had acted as a loyal man. An opportunity was given by Mr.
Peirsol, as soon as he was released from the restrictions imposed by the Trustees, for the pupils to read the
pieces spoken of.
