400 AUGUST 12 & 14, 1865 NEVADA GAZETTE
LITIGATION.—Since the Star Spangled Banner ledge has turned out to be “a good thing,” other
claimants have made their appearance, who claim to hold under a prior title to that of the parties from
whom Messrs. Kidd & Tisdale purchased. Still another company claims to have located and recorded this
ledge about the same time. Between the three companies considerable business for the Courts and round
fees for the lawyers are in prospect.
COUNTY COURT—AUGUST TERM, 1865—HON. A. C. NILES PRESIDING.—This Court met yesterday
morning, when the following business was transacted:
Rosenthal vs. McCormick—Appeal dismissed, and judgment for defendant for costs of appeal.
Cohn vs. Mosher—Judgment for plaintiff in accordance with prayer of complaint.
Edward Jeffree, William J. Graves and Thomas Thomas, natives of England, were admitted to
citizenship.
THEATRICAL.—We are glad to learn that the Trustees have made arrangements with an excellent
artist to paint the scenery and drop curtain for the Nevada Theater, and the work will be commenced
at once. It will probably take three or four weeks to complete the undertaking. We understand that the
negotiations which were pending with Tom Maguire for the opening of the theatre [sic] have been broken
off, he having failed to offer such terms as the Trustees could in justice to the stockholders accept.
Marshal Pierce informs us that if no other arrangements are made in the meantime, he will open it himself
as soon as the scenery is completed.
GRAND JURY.—This body adjourned last evening, after a session of two days. They returned
seven true bills and ignored five. Indictments were found as follows:
W. Anderson, James Brown and Charles Dorsey—Burglary, three indictments.
W. [Chauncey] Tyrrell—Grand larceny.
Ah Chee—Attempt to commit grand larceny.
Nicholas Jennings—Grand larceny.
The following is an extract from the report to the Jury:
We have examined the County Jail, and find it in good condition—clean, and in good order; conversed
with the prisoners, who make no complaint as to their rations or other allowances. We find the County
Hospital in good condition. The patients make no complaint except a lack of vegetables in the diet
of convalescents. We recommend the furnishing of the news of the day as a means of instruction and
diversion. For want of time no examination was made of the County Records, or other affairs pertaining
to the county.
MONDAY, AUGUST 14, 1865
DR. WM. J. KNOX.—The above named gentleman has been nominated in Santa Clara county for
State Senator. The Doctor is an old resident of this city, and is now largely interested here in real estate
and ditches. We congratulate the people of Santa Clara in making so wise a selection. The Doctor is a man
of extensive reading, sound judgment and sterling integrity.
HARD ON THE JOHNS.—It is stated that the “outside barbarians” have driven the Chinamen out
of the Meadow Lake District. The miners have not only taken time by the forelock, but have also taken
the Celestials by the top-knot and made them “sevugle.”
ROBBED.—. ... the cabins of three miners near Glenbrook Park were entered and robbed on
Friday night.
