500 OCTOBER 17 & 18, 1865 NEVADA GAZETTE
ECLIPSE OF THE SUN.—There will be an annular eclipse of the sun, October 19th, in the
morning, visible throughout the United States as a partial eclipse, except along the line of the central
eclipse, where the annular or ring-like appearance will be seen. . .. At San Francisco the eclipse will be
only partial, commencing before sunrise, and ending at thirty-two minutes past seven o’clock.
LIVELY.—We learn that the canvass for Justices of the Peace in Washington township is quite
lively. The candidates so far as we have learned, are, Lee. Garthe, D. Crittenden, J. Jones, F. Patterson, H.

live in the lower part of the township.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1865
JUDICIAL ELECTION.—The election to-day is likely to call out a considerable vote in this town,
on account of a lively contest between the candidates for Justice of the Peace—more interest being taken
in that office than for Supreme Judge. We have four candidates for Justice of this township: E. W. Smith,
the present incumbent, John Williams, John Kendall, and J. C. Palmer, Esq. Smith has held the office for
four or five years, Williams and Kendall have each held it a year, and Palmer is a practicing member of
the legal profession. We anticipate that quite a vote will be polled at this precinct.
MISSING.—The friends of B. F. Foster, who formerly resided in Nevada, have some fears that he
was a victim of the Yosemite explosion. He was here a week or two ago, and went to Sacramento with the
view of making some arrangement for a quartz mill, but was expected back some days ago. His brother
came up from Placer county yesterday, expecting he had returned, but as he was not here and has not been
heard from there is reason to fear he was killed. It is not known that he had any intention of going beyond
Sacramento, but it is probable, when there, he may have concluded to go to the Bay. Among the victims of
the explosion was an unknown man, whose description answers to that of Foster, except as to age. Foster
is about forty, and the unknown man was supposed to be fifty.
ESCAPE AND RECAPTURE.—Nick. Jennings alias Dick Turpin, made a successful attempt to
escape from the jail yesterday morning, but was soon recaptured. Nick. had never before exhibited any
inclination to make his escape, and for that reason has been allowed to be out in the hall around the cells
with the prisoners confined for light offenses. Yesterday morning Deputy Sheriff Belden unlocked the jail
