506 OCTOBER 27 & 28, 1865 NEVADA GAZETTE
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1865
HEAVY SHIPMENT.—The Allison Ranch Company shipped to San Francisco, on Wednesday
morning, by Wells, Fargo & Co., $38,000 in gold; the proceeds of four weeks’ work.
BEAR SHOT.—Z. P. Davis shot a small cinnamon bear just in the rear of our office yesterday
afternoon, with a revolver. The ball took effect in the head, and the animal died without a struggle.
BADLY HURT.—A man named Nelson, engaged in sawing lumber at a mill near Grass Valley, met
with a severe accident on Wednesday morning. His right hand was caught by the saw and badly mutilated,
the leaders [sic] of the hand being cut, and the third finger nearly severed.
DISTRICT COURT.—The jury in the case of the Excelsior Company against McConnel [sic] and
others not being able to agree on a verdict, were discharged yesterday morning. It is understood that the
jury stood eleven for the defendants and one for the plaintiffs. The case of Odgers against Hastings and
others was on trail yesterday.
COMPROMISED.—We learn that the suit of Gamble and others against Kidd and others, for
the Star Spangled Banner ledge, which has been pending in the District Court, was compromised on
Wednesday evening—the defendants buying out the claim of the plaintiffs. We have heard all manner
of statements from parties who professed to know, as the amount paid, the sums varying from $4,000 to
40,000. Now that the suit has been settled, and the injunction raised, we presume operations will again be
resumed on the ledge.
POSTOFFICE APPOINTMENT.—Postmaster Guild has appointed Charles Feige, late from East
Saginaw, Michigan, as Deputy Postmaster. Mr. Feige was a soldier in the early part of the war, and
received a severe wound in the leg by a canister shot at the battle of Pittsburg Landing, from which he has
never entirely recovered. He came to California mainly for his health, bringing a letter of recommendation
from the Postmaster at his former place of residence, and though a stranger here, was appointed in
accordance with the instructions of the head of the Department, to confer positions of the kind upon the
disabled soldiers.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1865
DISTRICT COURT.—In the case of Odgers against Hastings and others, the plaintiff was nonsuited
and the cause dismissed. The divorce case of Hill against Hill was on trial yesterday, but not concluded.
MILITARY ELECTION.—The Union Guard of Grass Valley have elected E. E. Roberts Captain
and E. W. Nash Junior Second Lieutenant, to fill the vacancies occasioned by the resignation of Doty and
Rodda.
DANCING PARTY.—The Nevada Quadrille Band advertises to give another social party at the
theater, on Thursday evening next, the 2d proximo. A general invitation is extended, and a jolly good time
anticipated.
A MYSTERY UNRAVELED.—The Grass Valley National relates that in 1857 or 1858 [Michael
Prefuma] a man whose name it does not remember, but who had a family in Nevada, suddenly
