570 NOVEMBER 3 & 4, 1865 GRASS VALLEY UNION FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1865 NARROW ESCAPE.—The accident to [Edward] Dunn, an account of which we gave yesterday, might have resulted fatally to another man who was engaged at work in the shaft from which Dunn was hoisting. It seems that a wooden pipe had been put down the shaft for the purpose of conveying air to J. C. Bee, the man at work in it. Upon this pipe cleets had been nailed, for the purpose of ascending and descending the shaft. While Dunn was hoisting the bucket it caught into one of these cleets, jerking the handle of the hoisting beam out of his hand. Fortunately for Bee, who was in the shaft at the time, a drift had been run from the shaft into which he sought and found shelter from inevitable death. Had it not been for this drift, he would most certainly have been killed by the falling tub of rock. NEW SCHOOL HOUSE.—Through the influence of Isaac Sanks, the colored people of this place have at last succeeded in erecting a school house that may well feel proud of, where they may enabled to give their little urchins an education. The new school house is large enough to accommodate more than the number of colored children now in this place. Sanks, requests us to say, that he will soon call on those who have signed the assessment roll for the amount due, and as many more as wish to contribute to the call, as they are yet in debt. We hope the committee may meet with a generous donation from our citizens. ACCIDENT.— Yesterday afternoon an accident occurred to Mr. E. McLaughlin, an estimable citizen of Grass Valley, which fortunately did not result seriously. While riding down Mill street, and just the other side of Neal, his horse shied at some object on the street and making a short turn, brought the wheels of the buggy upon the sidewalk throwing Mr. McLaughlin out and stunning him for a time. The buggy sustained considerable damage. PERSONAL.—Hon. A. W. Baldwin, U.S. District Judge of the State of Nevada, is at present on a visit to Grass Valley. Yesterday, in company with Thos. Findley, Geo. D. Roberts, and others, he visited some of the prominent mines in this vicinity, and we believe expressed himself well pleased with our promising ledges. NEW ISSUE.—The Nevada Literary Society are going to discuss the question of negro suffrage. This is a strong subject for the members, and they will have a good chance to display their “larnin.” ADMITTED TO PRACTICE.— Our fellow townsman, Col. Isaac Baggs, was on Wednesday admitted to practice in the District Court of Nevada County. The Colonel is an able lawyer, and a polished gentleman, and should command a large practice. NEWLY FINISHED.—The new bridge across Gold Run is progressing rapidly, and will probably be finished during the present week. When completed it will be at once an elegant and substantial structure. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1865 DIED. WALKER. In Grass Valley, Nov. 3d, Elijah Walker, a Native of Kentucky and late of Missouri. (The funeral will take place from the A.M.E. Church this afternoon at half-past two o’clock.) DREYFUSS. In Nevada, Nov. 2d, Louisa daughter of L. W. and Louisa Dreyfuss, aged 5 months and 1 day.
