74 FEBRUARY 23, 1865 NEVADA GAZETTE THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1865 Victory, Victory, Victory! CHARLESTON IS OURS! THE “OLD FLAG” FLOATS OVER THE CITY! 200 GUNS TAKEN! IMMENSE QUANTITIES OF STORES AND SUPPLIES! Crazy Sherman Marching On The Rebellion Nearly “Ausgespielt.” We believe there is no doubt of the fact that Charleston—the prolific nursery of treason, infernal crime and political infamy—the foul nest of diabolical plots and conspiracies against Union, Freedom and Humanity—has fallen into our hands. Glory be to God! The gaunt and famished rebel wretches who clung to it as a refuge and place of defense were at length obliged to succumb to the warlike skill of Sherman, and fly from the terror of his avenging arms. They left all their strong defenses, their munitions of war, and more than two hundred heavy guns, which fell into our hands. They burned their cotton... . The end of the wicked rebellion is near. Thanks be to the great God of Battles, and glory to our Nation’s heroes! A MORAL DISTINCTION.—The San Francisco Call moralizes upon the fact that persons who try to be and undoubtedly are scrupulously hones and upright in their dealings with individuals do not hesitate to swindle the Government whenever they have the opportunity, and even perjure themselves to do so. The Income Tax lists reveal a moral obliquity on the part of respectable, prominent, and even pious people, which is truly appalling. THE Commissioner of the General Land Office has issued instructions to the Land Office at Marysville, Stockton and San Francisco, to withdraw from sale all of the unoccupied public lands of odd numbered sections for a distance of twenty-five miles on either side of the line of the “Western Pacific Railroad,” from Sacramento to San Francisco, via Stockton. This is in conformity with the transfer of the Central Pacific to the Western road. All of the even numbered sections will be still open for pre-emption. THE General Land Office feels very much aggravated over repeated complaints made concerning the wholesale destruction of timber by unauthorized parties in California and Nevada. It is not intended to restrict miners and actual settlers from using timber on unoccupied public lands for mining and domestic purposes, but the wanton waste of timber, so long a crying evil in California, must and will be stopped. Existing laws being susceptible of abuse by the officers as well as by citizens, Senator Conness has in preparation a bill to guard against the cutting and deportation of timber, but securing to the miner and the agriculturist his right. VACATION.—The public schools of this city had vacation, yesterday, in honor of the birthday of the Father of his Country. SALUTE.—A salute of thirty-five guns was fired yesterday from Rigby Hill, in commemoration of the day and of the capture of Charleston. Many flags were also displayed throughout the city. IT PAYS.—Mr. Michel obtained from Palmer’s mill 280 pounds of tailings from rock of the Pennsylvania Company, worked it in one of Baux & Guiod’s pans, and realized $3 25, or at the rate of about $24 per ton.
