The People vs. R. Battersby—Time for arraignment and plea continued till Tuesday next. Trial set for
same day.

for sentence on Monday morning. Ah Mann, jointly indicted with above defendant, turned State’s
evidence and was discharged.

THAT LUNATIC.—We feel proud of our lunatic [Fritz Burckhardt], and take considerable credit
to ourself for discovering him. He is none of your sentimental, maudlin, moon-struck individuals, but
a genuine, raving maniac, who howls, tears his hair, butts his head against stone walls, and performs
sundry other light and fantastic tricks. Judge Niles yesterday issued an order for his commitment to the
Insane Asylum.
SERIOUS ACCIDENT—Yesterday, while Mr. G. S. S. Getchell was at work in his mining claim at

INCENDIARISM.—An attempt was made last Wednesday evening to burn the school-house near
the Catholic church in Grass Valley. The fire was discoveed and extinguished before much damage was

HABEAS CORPUS.—Josiah Dodge was brought before Judge McFarland upon a writ of habeas

planted in the yard of the new Courthouse.

last of $200 in amalgam and thirty pounds of quicksilver.
SANITARY.—We learn that the entertainment given at You Bet on the 22d inst., by the patriotic
citizens of Little York township, for the benefit of the Sanitary Fund, netted $300 for the good cause.
PARADE.—The Bridgeport Guard will have a parade and target shooting at Birchville, on the
4th of March. We understand this fine company contemplate arming themselves with Henry’s Patent
Repeating Rifle.
THE SALUTE.—On Saturday at noon, according to previous notice, the gun from the summit
of Rigby Hill proclaimed the popular rejoicing for the restoration of the glorious National flag to the
