Carkeek showed himself a man of great strength, and, had he wrestled according to Cornish rules, would have had an easy job in winning the stake; but Whelan displayed more agility and a greater familiarity with the collar-and-elbow style of wrestling. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1866 President Johnson has issued a proclamation designating Thursday, November 29th, as the day of thanksgiving and praise for the people of the United States. Secretary Seward has virtually retired from the Cabinet. He is relieved of all official duty, and Fred. W. Seward is acting as Secretary of State. DIRECTORY AND HISTORY OF NEVADA COUNTY.—-Attention is called to the prospectus of a work entitled a “Directory and History of Nevada County,” published in our advertising department, which work will be compiled and published by E. F. Bean, our County Assessor, and J. M. Wolfe, of this place. The work will be historical and statistical, containing an elaborate history of every mining camp in Nevada county, every quartz and gravel claim, every organization, etc. The directory portion of the work will embrace the name, occupation and residence of every male citizen of Nevada county. The historical portion of the book will contains a sketch of every camp in the county, from the discovery of gold up to the time of publishing the Directory, which sketches will be written by competent residents of each Township. A work of this kind, giving a true history of Nevada county, has long been needed, and the gentlemen getting up this History are competent to the task of making it a complete work. Attention is called to the advertisement of the book, from which the reader can form a pretty general idea of the design of the publishers. Any information concerning the forthcoming publication, will be communicated by J. M. Wolfe, at Geo. W. Dixon’s. SECOND CLASS OFFICES.—The Post Offices at Nevada and Grass Valley have been raised to Second Class Offices, and the salary of Post Masters in each place raised. The salary in Nevada was $1,300, it is now $3,200. In Grass Valley it is increased from $1,100 to $2,200. This increase of salary is leased on the amount of business done at the offices last year. So says the Nevada Transcript. TO RENT AND FOR SALE.—Mose Korn, being about to remove to San Francisco, offers his furniture and carpets for sale and the house for rent. To a family desiring to go housekeeping this is a rare opportunity, and one that will no doubt be promptly taken advantage of. The house is commodious and convenient, and the furniture in fine order. STORE ROBBED.—The store of M. J. Hydeliff [sic], at Red Dog, in this county, was robbed, last Sunday night, of goods amounting to four hundred dollars worth. The robbers were tracked a short distance in the direction of You Bet, where the tracks were lost. BIDS WILL BE RECEIVED BY THE TOWN CLERK Until TUESDAY October 16th, 1866, for the construction of a SEWER or RUN-WAY for Water, on the west side of Auburn street, and across Main street, as per specifications to be seen at the Clerk’s office.
