Carkeek showed himself a man of great strength, and, had he wrestled according to Cornish rules, would
have had an easy job in winning the stake; but Whelan displayed more agility and a greater familiarity
with the collar-and-elbow style of wrestling.

DIRECTORY AND HISTORY OF NEVADA COUNTY.—-Attention is called to the prospectus of
a work entitled a “Directory and History of Nevada County,” published in our advertising department,
which work will be compiled and published by E. F. Bean, our County Assessor, and J. M. Wolfe, of this
place. The work will be historical and statistical, containing an elaborate history of every mining camp
in Nevada county, every quartz and gravel claim, every organization, etc. The directory portion of the
work will embrace the name, occupation and residence of every male citizen of Nevada county. The
historical portion of the book will contains a sketch of every camp in the county, from the discovery of
gold up to the time of publishing the Directory, which sketches will be written by competent residents of
each Township. A work of this kind, giving a true history of Nevada county, has long been needed, and
the gentlemen getting up this History are competent to the task of making it a complete work. Attention
is called to the advertisement of the book, from which the reader can form a pretty general idea of the
design of the publishers. Any information concerning the forthcoming publication, will be communicated
by J. M. Wolfe, at Geo. W. Dixon’s.
SECOND CLASS OFFICES.—The Post Offices at Nevada and Grass Valley have been raised to
Second Class Offices, and the salary of Post Masters in each place raised. The salary in Nevada was
$1,300, it is now $3,200. In Grass Valley it is increased from $1,100 to $2,200. This increase of salary is
leased on the amount of business done at the offices last year. So says the Nevada Transcript.
TO RENT AND FOR SALE.—Mose Korn, being about to remove to San Francisco, offers his
furniture and carpets for sale and the house for rent. To a family desiring to go housekeeping this is a rare
opportunity, and one that will no doubt be promptly taken advantage of. The house is commodious and
convenient, and the furniture in fine order.
STORE ROBBED.—The store of M. J. Hydeliff [sic], at Red Dog, in this county, was robbed, last
Sunday night, of goods amounting to four hundred dollars worth. The robbers were tracked a short
distance in the direction of You Bet, where the tracks were lost.
