NEVADA TRANSCRIPT JANUARY 9, 10, 12, 1867 3
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1867
BEAN’S DIRECTORY.—We have been shown advance sheets of Bean’s History and Directory of
Nevada county. They are neatly printed and present a first rate appearance. The work will be a complete
history and reliable directory of the county, and will be valuable to all interested in our county affairs.
NEW POSTMASTER.—M. S. Norton has received his commission and will enter upon his duties
as Postmaster at Grass Valley at an early day.
MEADOW LAKE ITEMS.—We learn from the Sun that the school house took fire on Wednesday
last, but the fire was extinguished before any damage was done. A literary society is to be organized at
Meadow Lake.
SNOW.—A gentleman who left Bear Valley on Tuesday last says the snow is about six inches deep
in the valley.
DELINQUENT TAXES.—Since the first publication of the delinquent tax list quite a number have
paid up, but there still remains upon the list a large number. Over five hundred summonses have been
issued and are nailed up at the Court House door. The number of delinquents in each township is as
follows:
Grass Valley.............. 200
Meadow Lake............ 12
Little York..............24
Bridgeport... 29
Bloomfield................. 19
Washington... 15
Nevada... 61
Eureka... 7
Rough & Ready......... 34
Total............ 401
This list is made up after deducting those who have paid since the publication of summons. The list
will be published again on Saturday morning in the Transcript, and in the meantime those who do not
want their names to appear had better call on Judge Kendall and pay their taxes.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 1867
THE VAN HAGEN [sic] CASE.—The case of J. P. Van Hagen [Hagan], charged with extortion in
office by demanding and receiving larger fees than allowed by statute, for services as Justice of the Peace,
has come up in Court. The defence is that the law fixing the fees was repealed and there was no law
under which he could be punished. A suit has also been commenced against Van Hagen by a man named
Tavolvich for $10,000 damage for false imprisonment.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 1867
NUMBER OF MEN.—E. F. Bean informs us that he has enrolled for his directory the names of
1,500 men for Nevada Township, with their business and place of residence. There are about 1,000 voters
in the township.
