8 JANUARY 25, 27, 29, 30, 1867 NEVADA TRANSCRIPT
DIED. In this city, January 23d, 1867, Charles E. Matteson, aged 20 years and 10 months.
THE SNOW STORM.—For nearly forty-eight hours it has snowed almost incessantly, and the
ground is covered to the depth of eighteen inches. But a short distance from town toward the ridges it
is two or three feet deep, and a gentleman who came in by way of Sugar Loaf Gap yesterday, says he
came through snow waist deep. Never before was such a snow storm known in these parts. Yesterday
men were out on a number of buildings throwing off the snow. One or two awnings gave way under the
heavy load. There seems to be little prospect for any change in the weather at this writing. Should this
storm be followed by a warm rain the rivers will be filled to overflowing, and great damage would, in all
probability, be done.
At large barn on Boulder street, formerly used as a slaughter house, was crushed yesterday by the
weight of snow. We learn that the snow storm was almost as heavy at Grass Valley as here. A stable,
carpenter’s shop and several other buildings were crushed by the snow.
THE DISTRICT COURT. The District Court was yesterday engaged in the trial of the case of Riggs
vs Venard. This is a suit against Venard, as Constable, for levying upon and selling property not liable to
execution. The parties reside at Meadow Lake, and a number of witnesses were in attendance from that
place.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 27, 1867
NUMBER REGISTERED.—With a voting population of over five thousand in this county, the
Great Register only contains about sixteen hundred names. At the next State election no one can vote who
is not registered, as the law will then be in full operation. We advise all good citizens to call at the Clerk’s
office and enroll their names.
“PROGRESS IN THE CHURCH.”—A sermon will be preached by Rev. R. Bayard Snowden on
this, Sunday evening, at the Brick Church, on “Churches and Ministers of the Past and Present.” It will
touch upon matters which have lately been somewhat discussed.
SLUICING THE SNOW OFF.—Yesterday the Main street folks attached a section of hose to the
fire plug and turned on a full head of water. A sluice was opened through the snow to the bridge and the
heavy pressure of water soon cleaned of the streets. The hydraulic power accomplished in an hour what it
would [have] taken two men a day to do.
DISTRICT COURT, Saturday, Jan. 26th. [Mahala] Dower vs [John] Dower. Referred to W. W. Cross
to take testimony by question and answer and report to the Court.
