GRASS VALLEY UNION MAY 1 & 2, 1872 103 WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 1872 BORN. In Grass Valley, April 28th, 1872, to RICHARD VINCENT and Wife, a Son. WITHDRAWN.—W. H. Montgomery is not a candidate any longer for Marshal of Grass Valley. His withdrawal is due to the fact that friends of his and of S. D. Leavitt met and consulted about the matter. It was agreed that an arbitration should take place, which did take place. The result was that Mr. Montgomery declined in favor of Mr. Leavitt. TOWN ELECTION. Next Monday will be the town election. Two trustees are to be elected, an Assessor and a Treasurer are to be elected. There are only three candidates for Marshal namely; Harris, Leavitt and Webster. No candidates for Trustees are announced. The Trustee office is an important one for the town. There will probably be two candidates for Treasurer, and one for Assessor. GOING EAST.—Otur fellow citizen, George W. Dixon Esqr., and his family go east to-day on a visit to his old home at Rochester N.Y. They propose to take a pleasure jaunt of about two months and then to return to Grass Valley. We wish them a pleasant journey and a happy reunion on the other side of the continent. YOU BET.—The Ellerton Troupe will play at You Bet Saturday evening next. The people there will enjoy a good performance. The house should be crowded. BALL TO-NIGHT.—The French ladies of Grass Valley give a Calico Ball to-night at Hamilton Hall. Preparations for a most pleasant party have been made, and the [attendance] will be and should be very large. SOCIABLE.—There is to be a social party at the Methodist Church Parsonage. Those gatherings are very pleasant, and all who have ever attended one of them will be certain to put in an appearance to-night. All are cordially invited to attend. THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1872 BORN. In Grass Valley, April 30th, 1872, to THOMAS HOOPER and Wife a Daughter. At Grass Valley, May 1st, 1872, to JOHN COLLINS and Wife, a Daughter. HIGH SCHOOL EXAMINATION.—The pupils of the [Grass Valley] High School are examined every three months by printed question sent from the State University at Oakland, to the Principal. The examinations are conducted with the utmost strictness and are calculated to produce very beneficial effects upon the schools. The following is a list of the names of those pupils who obtained as high as 75 per cent. in the examination in English Grammar: FIRST GRADE. Emma Griffith 94, Peter Riley 94, Idella Emmons 87, John Riley 87, Walter Finnie 87, Henry Johnston 84, Marion Stone 81, Andrew Stokes 78. SECOND GRADE. Geo. Sleep 81, Janet Henderson 77, Harriet Hill 75, Lulu Dorsey 75. THIRD GRADE. William Hudson 87, Emma Tompkins 85, William Helfrich 80, Ella Smith 77. The first and second grades are credited on first grade papers; the third on third grade papers. COUNTY TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE.—The Annual County Teachers’ Institute will convene at
