WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17, 1872
DIED. At Allison Ranch, near Grass Valley January 16th, 1872, Josephine, wife of F. K.
Startsmith, aged 23 years 1 mo. and 20 days, a native of California. The funeral will take
place from the family residence, Allison Ranch, this afternoon at 2 o’clock.
FATAL ACCIDENT.—Last night a man named Myers, who was attending ditch on the San Juan
ditch, fell from a flume in Grizzly Cafion, on the line of the ditch, and was killed. The body
was found on Monday morning by John True. The deceased was about 50 years old.
SOUTH YUBA CANAL CO.—James Whartenby, says the Nevada Transcript of yesterday, who
has for eighteen years past filled the office of President and Superintendent of the South Yuba Canal
Company, has resigned his position of Superintendent, and Chas. Marsh, who has been Secretary
for about the same length of time, has been appointed Superintendent. Whartenby still retains his
position as President. Both these gentlemen are original owners and projectors of the enterprise
undertaken by the company. The South Yuba Canal is one of the oldest enterprises of the kind in the
State, being commenced in 1853. Since that time they have constructed and acquired by purchase
nearly three hundred miles of ditches, and built large reservoirs. They are now supplying the Nevada
ridge with water and also running a large quantity of water into Placer county, to be used in the
vicinity of Dutch Flat and other points. Since its organization the company stock has been held for
the most part by the original projectors of the work and there has been no clashing of interests or
quarrels among the stockholders as has characterized most enterprises of a like character. Every
branch of the work and detail of the business of the company is managed systematically, and it has
long been one of the leading enterprises of the county.
LOCAL BREVITIES.—The weather is most beautiful, clear and bright. Yesterday the
thermometer was at 58 all day, but before sundown the mark was at 50 degrees. A north wind
came up in the afternoon, which insures dry roads in a few days.
