168 JULY 18 & 20, 1872 GRASS VALLEY UNION
THURSDAY, JULY 18, 1872
ARRIVAL OF HON. A. A. SARGENT—A RECEPTION.—Hon. A. A. Sargent, M.C., and Senator
elect, arrived yesterday from Washington City, and he is now in Nevada city. He came very near to
having a reception on the Colfax road, about a mile east of this place. A long line of carriages and
buggies came down from Nevada city bearing those who wished to meet and to greet Mr. Sargent.
The buggies and carriages had in them Col. J. A. Lancaster, Major Wm. Davidson, Captains Deal,
Sloan, Marsh, Hanson, Schmittburg and others. Cols. Perrin and Beatty joined the cavalcade at
Grass Valley. All of them went down to Blodgett’s on the lower Colfax road, and under a shed there,
they awaited Mr. Sargent’s coming. But Mr. Jacobs, who is Mr. Sargent’s mining partner, brought
the Senator elect over the upper road, and the receptors waited in vain. Messrs. Sargent and Jacobs
passed through Grass Valley without stopping, while the receptors were gazing toward Colfax. A
horseman was sent down the road to recall the waiting gentlemen who had been flanked. They came
back and without looking at anybody in Grass Valley, they whipped up their steeds towards Nevada
city. We do not think they caught up with Mr. Sargent. The reception was well intended but was an
actual failure. They were on the wrong track.

SATURDAY, JULY 20, 1872
WATER SUPPLY.—The Grass Valley Water Company on yesterday, secured from the Howard
Hill Mining Company a further supply of water, for use in the town. The Water Company have leased
the use of the water which comes from the Howard Hill Company’s tunnel and the water which will
be pumped from the mine. This arrangement will enable the Water Company to keep its pipes full
all through the dry months. Danger for fires will be greatly lessened, and green trees, flower gardens
and general comfort will be, also, promoted by the arrangement. The Water Company will commence
at once to make the necessary connections, with ditches and flumes, between its reservoir and the
tunnel of the Howard Hill Company. The connecting works will be completed as soon as it is possible
to do so.
NEW ICE COMPANY.—The Truckee Republican gives this refreshing information:
B. B. Redding and W. E. Brown, are making preparations to engage in the manufacture
of ice on a large scale on Prosser creek. Their works will be located about two thousand
feet from the mouth of Prosser creek and the railroad. They will immediately commence
