GRASS VALLEY UNION AUGUST 14-17, 1872 185
BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.—The following business was transacted by the Board of
Supervisors on Saturday evening last:
Ordered that M. L. Marsh be appointed Committee to procure specifications for building
bridges in Grass Valley on Auburn street, and on Bennett street, both in wood and stone and the
Clerk authorized to advertise for proposals to do the work in accordance with said specifications to
be submitted on the 29th of August.
Ordered that by reason of the absence from the State of J. G. Mather, County Surveyor the office
is hereby declared vacant, and D. B. Merry appointed to fill the vacancy.

CAMP MEETING.—The Chinese of this burg are prosecuting the erection of the buildings
wherein to hold their fandango. The extortionists—we mean canvassers have been around and
collected the “two bittee” from the charitably disposed moon-eyed sallow-faced, chicken-stealing,
opium-smoking sons and daughters of —Confucius, and have managed to raise enough to defray
the expenses of said shin-dig. The idols—men, monkeys, snakes, devils, tigers, etc., which are made
out of bamboo and fancy-colored paper—are nearly finished. Fiery, untamed steeds—constructed
from the same material—are added to the list this year. Red-nostrils, flashing eyes, uplifted tails
and stiff legs go to make up these steeds. We believe the confusion commences on the 24th instant,
and continue, heaven knows how long, we don’t, but we opine that if they continue till the Chinamen
forsake the evil of their ways, Gabriel will be apt to interrupt them when he toots his horn. In the
meantime the agony goes on and the neighborhood is distracted.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 1872
WORK AT BOWMAN’S.—Yesterday’s Transcript says: “The North Bloomfield Gravel Mining
Company are making rapid advancement in the building of their dams at Bowman’s ranch. They
have in their employ about fifty white men and one hundred and twenty-five Chinamen. The
difficulty between this company and the Eureka Lake company, a few miles above Bowman's, still
continues, the gangs of men of the two companies being at work close together building works to
appropriate the waters of the lakes.

THE RAILROAD.—The prospects of the local railroad are not as bright as we could wish, and
yet there is nothing in its situation to cause despondency. The subscriptions to the stock are given
below, and these subscriptions were obtained in two days. At Nevada city we understand that the
sum in the neighborhood of $40,000 has been subscribed. . . .
Following are the progressive men of the town as far as heard from and many more will come in
and we will then give their names:
