GRASS VALLEY UNION OCTOBER 10 & 11, 1872 227
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1872
BORN. At Grass Valley, October 8th, 1872, to JAMES PETERS and Wife, a Son.
At Randolph Flat, September 24th, 1872 to CHARLES B. FROST and Wife, a Daughter.
A BROTHER KILLS ANOTHER.—The Nevada Transcript of yesterday says: “On Sunday last,
at Camptonville, two brothers went hunting, and during the day one was accidentally shot and
killed by the other. They were children of Mr. Nuttal, aged respectively 12 and 17 years. While going
through the brush a hare started up, and the younger brother raised his gun suddenly, when it was
discharged, the whole load taking effect in the neck of his brother, back of and below the ear. The
wounded boy fell dead in an instant. The terrible accident cast a gloom over the whole community in
which it occurred.”
A RUNAWAY BOY—BAD BOYS.—Yesterday morning a boy aged some 14 or 15 years, a son of
James Donnelly of Nevada city, took $60 from his father’s house and started out to see the world.
It was supposed that he came to Grass Valley, and the father came down to find the youth. At last
accounts the Donnelly boy had not been discovered. Two other Nevada city boys were arrested by
the Marshal on the supposition that they had shared the Donnelly money. The two came down in
a buggy went around town on a splurge and got through with the biggest part of a twenty dollar
piece. The names of the two are Driver and Smith. They say they got their money by selling quartz
specimens to a Chinaman. The specimens were taken by one of the boys from his father’s barn.
Deputy Sheriff Sanford happened to be in town, and he took charge of Smith and Driver and will
return them to their respective parents and to a good and sound constitutional thrashing, it is to be
hoped; The two boys have made trips to Grass Valley before yesterday in a buggy.

DEATH OF J. W. COFFROTH.—The Sacramento Union of the 9th has the following sad item:
“J. W. Coffroth, the eminent lawyer and well-known and esteemed citizen died suddenly at
his residence in this city about 8:30 o’clock this morning of internal hemorrhage, caused
by the bursting of a blood-vessel. He had just finished his breakfast, and was sitting on
a lounge waiting for a street car, when he suddenly fellow to the floor. At the time the
only person in the room beside himself was a Chinese servant, who promptly alarmed
the household, and all was done for the unfortunate gentleman that was possible, but he
survived only a few moments.”
MACADAMIZED STREET VS. PLANK.—It has cost me for planking the street in front of
my office $17 50 each time the work has been done. The planks require to be newly laid once in
two years. On taking them up I found the sills not only rotten but in many places had entirely
disappeared. I have just laid a solid foundation of stone and covered it with gravel and it has cost me:
Hauled rock and gravel $13 00
Gravel 35
One man two days 500
Brick for sluice 100
Total cost $19 35
I have now a road that will last a life time with very slight repair yearly. I give this as a hint to
our Board of Trustees and to the public interested. A. DELANO.
SUPERVISORS.—The Liberal Convention for the nomination of a candidate for Supervisor
will meet in Hamilton Hall tomorrow afternoon, at two o'clock. It is hoped that delegates from
