250 NOVEMBER 14 & 15, 1872 GRASS VALLEY UNION
VOTE OF NEVADA COUNTY.—The following is the total number of votes polled in each
township: Bridgeport 347

Eureka 221
Little York 164
Rough and Ready 231
Washington 144
Grass Valley 1,024

AT IT.—By a little item published in the Virginia Chronicle we learn what our predecessor in the
scribbling business is now doing. The item says: “Among the arrivals in this city yesterday and to-day
we notice William S. Byrne, an old newspaper editor, and now traveling agent for the popular liquor
house of Wand, Kane & Co., 607 and 609 Front street, San Francisco.”
GRAND JURY.—The Grand Jurors were at work all day yesterday. It is presumed that they have
found a number of true bills not yet made public. Where the parties indicted have not been arrested,
it is unlawful for a Grand Juror to disclose the names of those indicated. We mention this because a
few persons here do not seem to understand the fact.
JOHN HUSSEY.—The Nevada Transcript pays John Hussey, the retiring Supervisor, a
handsome and well merited compliment, when it says of him: “Mr. Hussey has made an excellent
member of the Board, and retires with honor to himself and credit to his constituents.” We say that
there is no more honest, careful, industrious and intelligent officer than Mr. Hussey has been.
JUSTICE PAYNTER.—P. H. Paynter, Esq., Justice of the Peace, has established his office in
Hooper’s building, upstairs, next to the UNION office. Judge Paynter will deal out justice at the place
mentioned, and will attend to all kinds of conveyancing. He is an old hand at that judicial bellows.
CONCERT.— On Saturday night, at Hamilton Hall, will be represented the sacred drama of
Joseph and his Brethren, for the benefit of the M. E. Church. S. P. Everett is the manager and it is
only necessary to mention this fact to guarantee its success. Assist the boys in their noble effort.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1872
MARRIED. At Nevada City, November 13th, 1872, by Hon. John Caldwell, County Judge, Mr.
JOSEPH SNYDER to Miss ANNIE BERNHARD, both of Grass Valley.
LOCAL BREVITIES.—Mrs. C. W. Smith left Grass Valley yesterday to visit friends and relatives
in the east. We wish her a pleasant journey.
Races at Glenbrook next Saturday afternoon. See the advertisement and you will see that it will
cost you nothing to see the race. The track is in splendid condition.
GERMAN SOCIAL BALL.—We acknowledge the receipt of a ticket and an invitation to a social
ball, to be given by the Germans of Grass Valley, on the evening of the 20th instant, at Hamilton Hall
A BIT OF SCRIMMAGE.—Wednesday last a scrimmage occurred at Glenbrook Park between
James Peters and John Rial. The affray, if it can be called one, took place on the stage. Jimmy Peters
had been abused by Rial in Grass Valley, before the latter started for Nevada, Rial being in the stage
ready to start while he abused Peters. The vilest epithets were applied to Peters, among the mildest
