GRASS VALLEY UNION NOVEMBER 15, 16, 19, 1872 251 of which was son of a b—h. Peters promised Rial a licking for those words and then and there invited Rial to go out of the stage. Rial would not give the desired satisfaction, but told Peters to go up to Glenbrook and there they would settle the matter. Peters went up, but Rial refused to get out of the stage or to retract his foul language. Peters got into the stage and struck Rial several blows, a conservative kind of a whipping being administered. The man whom Peters struck is not the one who complained of Wyman on Wednesday before Justice Davis. Peters’ case is now in the hands of Justice Paynter, who will, to-day, adjudicate the affair. SCHOOL BALL.—There will be a grand ball at the school house of the North Star school district, on the evening of Thursday the 28th of this month—Thanksgiving Day. The ball will be managed by the ladies of the district. An invitation to attend is hereby extended to ladies and gentlemen. The proceeds of the ball will be given to the school fund of the district. Tickets to the ball will be only $3, and admits the holder to supper. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1872 BORN. At Grass Valley, November 14th, 1872, to JOSEPH GRIFFITHS and Wife, a Son. LOCAL BREVITIES.—The insurance companies have adjusted the loss of fire of Ben McCauley’s quartz mill. The loss is about $6,200 and the Home Mutual and North British will promptly pay over the coin. The weather for the last day or two, has been delicious. Night and day the air has been soft and balmy, and it makes an old man feel young. We are not of the boastful kind of Californians, but we assert that no country in the world can give such weather as this part of the State is now enjoying. COUNTY COURT.—Nov. 14th.—The Transcript furnishes this item: The following persons indicted by the Grand Jury were arraigned in the County Court: The people vs. Ah Chung, indicted for assault to commit rape. J. T. Caldwell appointed to defend and defendant allowed until Saturday to plead. The people vs. Geo. M. Farr, indicted for assault with intent to murder. J. B. Johnson appointed to defend, and defendant allowed until Saturday at 2 o'clock to plead. The people vs. Wm. Martin, indicted for grand larceny. Allowed until Saturday evening at 10 o'clock to plead, and Judge T. H. Caswell appointed to defend. Court adjourned to Saturday morning a 10 o'clock. OLD BLOCK’S PLAY.—A. Delano, Esq., of this place has written a play entitled “Old Block’s California.” The play is to be brought out at the Metropolitan theater, San Francisco, next Monday night. The author goes down this morning to order to be present at the representation. We hope the play will achieve a great success. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1872 DIED. At Grass Valley, November 16th, 1872, WALTER R. COLVIN, a native of Scotland, aged 22 years. The funeral will take place to-day, at the hour of 2 o'clock, P.M., from tie residence of R. C. Webster, corner of Auburn street and Bank Alley. SPECIMEN STEALING.—Last Saturday a miner named John Johns, working in the Eureka mine, was detected by the watchman in the “dry house” in the act of carrying off a specimen. Johns attempted to take away the specimen in his hand but was observed in the act by Frank Chenot. Special Officer Snow was informed of the affair and Johns was arrested by Snow. A complaint for petty larceny was made before P. H. Paynter, Esq., J. P., and Johns was brought before the
