30 FEBRUARY 6-9, 1872 GRASS VALLEY UNION It is proper to state that the Miners’ Union, as an organization, had nothing to do with the meeting but the working miners in and out of the Union composed the meeting. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1872 UNCLE MAC.—Mr. McRae, the editor of the National Gazette has been sick lately, but is now recovering. We hear that he is down in Rough and Ready township luxuriating in buttermilk, yellow legged chickens and all that sort of things. His health is sure to be restored. JAILOR.—Sheriff elect Perrin will, we understand, appoint as jailor, Elmer P. Sanford, of Grass Valley. The appointee is one of our best known citizens and is one who will fill the trust most faithfully. We are disposed to talk a little sweet to Sanford just now because we may have occasion for his friendship when he keeps the keys. . . . DIPHTHERIA.—We are informed by Dr. Coombs that diphtheria is making its appearance in this place—there being several cases now under treatment. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1872 COUNTY PHYSICIAN’S REPORT.—The Quarterly Report of Dr. R. M. Hunt, for the quarter ending Feb. 4th, has been submitted to the Board of Supervisors. From this it appears that there were 26 patients in the County Hospital at the beginning of the quarter; 15 have been admitted during the quarter; patients discharged cured, 6; discharged relieved, 3; patients left, 5; died, 3; number of patients under treatment, 25. The following are the deaths that have occurred during the quarter: Patrick Dolin, cancer, native of Ireland, died Jan. 7th. Chas. Maddison, secondary syphilis, native of Massachusetts, died Feb. 4th. Claude Duflayol, jaundice, native of France, died Feb. 2d. GRAND JURY.—Yesterday the Grand Jury completed its labors and was discharged. True bills were found against Ah Guy, Si Chew and Ah Why for burglary in robbing Wood’s tailor shop of a large amount of fine goods. Francisco Hidalgo, Alias Muchacho, was indicted for the crime of attempting to commit a rape. The prisoner is in a bad condition and will probably die of his wounds. Jim and Ed, two Indians were indicted for the crime of highway robbery. Henry Roberts was indicted for an assault with a deadly weapon, with intent to do great bodily harm. Ah Sow was indicted for burglary. Indictments against R. Carrigan, Louis Forgillon, Ah Look and Ah Yung were ignored. The Grand Jury have our commendations. BODY FOUND.—A San Francisco telegram of the 6th says: “The remains of an unknown man was found at Meiggs’ Wharf, in the bay this evening. He had been in the water so long that he was past recognition. He had on a water-proof overcoat, black cloth vest—single breasted—ribbed cashmere coat, heavy blue cloth pants, calf boots, one foxed at the instep; knit underclothing, five feet eight inches high, no beard, teeth perfect; in the pockets a pair of buckskin gloves, brass watch chain, ladies’ white handkerchief and a four-bladed tortoise-shell handled knife.” We suggest that it may be that the remains are those of David Bovyer, who committed suicide some months ago. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1872 BORN. At Grass Valley, February 8th, 1872, to DENNIS MEAGHER and Wife a Son.
