more gold to the world than any other town in California. It is the largest and most important town
north of Sacramento, having a population of 7,063. .. .
Grass Valley is an incorporated town, having an incorporate limits of one mile square. The town
government is conducted by a Board of Trustees, consisting of five members, a Marshal, a Town clerk
and watchman. The town has iron water pipe laid through all the principal streets. One gas company
supplies the town with light.
It is situated four miles from Nevada city, the county seat, twelve miles from Colfax, the nearest
railroad station, and thirty-six miles from Marysville, the head of navigation. With each of these
places it is connected by daily stages, over good roads... .
The traveling public are accommodated by eight hotels; the spiritual wants of the people are
supplied by thirty-two bar-room, including hotels, and four breweries; we are amply supplied with
provisions, groceries, etc., by twelve provision stores; the hearts of our ladies are delighted and the
purses of our husbands and fathers lightened by five dry goods stores and three millinery shops;
the juvenile portion of Grass Valley patronize six variety stores; three feed stores are supported; our
furniture comes from three furniture stores; our feet are covered by three boot stores and seven
shoemaker shops; our teeth are looked after and doctored by three dentists; our health is protected
by eight doctors and three drug stores; two hair dressers and seven barbers are needed to fix us up
in the tonsorial way; of blacksmiths and wagon-makers we have six; our wearing apparel comes from
five stores; four bakeries are required to feed such of our people as do not do their own baking; the
literary tastes are filled by two book and paper stores, one daily newspaper and one public library;
the jewelry comes from three jewelers; the people are supplied with the wherewith to keep their
hands, faces and clothes clean by one soap factory; our mines are supplied with hardware from
three hardware stores; in the way of livery we have two large and well supplied stables; our lumber
for building purposes comes from four lumber yards, one of which contains a planing machine; one
saddle and harness shop supplies us in that line; three restaurants are supported by the transient
customers; our likenesses are produced by two photograph galleries; six butcher shops supply us in
fresh meat; three tailor-shops find employment among us; one gunsmith does all we require in his
line; two banks are always ready to receive such deposits as we may be able to make; our property
is taken care of by two fire companies, who number some forty members, all told; two foundries
are kept constantly running by our mines; one soda factory supplies all the county with soda and
sarsaparilla; two public halls are patronized by our pleasure loving people; eight schools houses
are required to learn the “young idea to shoot,” two orphan asylums provide the friendless orphans
with homes; six lawyers and two Justices of the Peace deal out justice to us; our future state is
talked about from six pulpits; and after we have served our time and help run all of the above named
businesses we find that two undertakers await to bury us in four cemeteries. .. .
Boston Ravine.
Properly speaking this location is a part of Grass Valley, for you hardly get out of the
incorporate limits of Grass Valley before you arrive in the center of Boston Ravine. Near it are
situated the famous ledges of Rocky Bar, Scadden Flat, and Gold Hill. Near the boundary line of the
two towns in situated the Gold Hill mill, which with Laramie’s, does all the crushing of quartz that
our prospectors procure. Boston Ravine contains two provision stores, five saloons, one butcher
shop, one blacksmith shop, one bakery, one brewery, one barber shop and one general store.
CHANGE OF HOUR.—In consequence of the state of the roads, the stage for Colfax will leave
Grass Valley this morning, and until further notice, at 7 o’clock, A.M.
LOCAL BREVITIES.—That fine music box was won by Madame Marmiesse, on a ticket
presented to her by a friend on Christmas.....The Grass Valley Minstrels play at Hamilton Hall next
Saturday night.....No Grass Valley UNION to-morrow, and we know the people will feel sorry at
