100 MAY 22-24, 26, 1877 GRASS VALLEY UNION
snow fall in this county, which some broke down the boughs of the trees. The month of May, in the
mountains, is rather an uncertain season for successful picnics. But in a few weeks things will warm
up, and then people will not be happy.
THE picnic.—The German Social picnic, at Ismerts, was a great success on Sunday last. Every
one who attended, said the attendance was very large, seemed to enjoy the occasion. Nothing
happened to mar the pleasure of the day. The German Social Club members fully sustained their
reputation for hospitality. They will give another picnic next Spring.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, 1877
BORN. At North Bloomfield, May 19, 1877, to GEO. W. BUCKLEY and Wife, a Son.
DIED. At Nevada City, May 20, 1877. VIRGINIA, daughter of Louis and Manuela Duluc, aged 11
years, 2 months and 2 days.
STARRVILLE.—This is the name of a new town which has sprung up near Moore’s Flat. Its
principal industry in mining, and the Watt mine is the one that is being opened there, and which
started the town into life. The Gluyas Shaft, at the Watt Mine, Starrville, is going down as rapidly as
it is possible to sink. The prospects of the shaft to tap a rich lead of gravel are very bright, and the
property will be worked by drifting and not by hydraulicking; the drifting system is getting to be
more in favor than the other on account of economy and a more complete saving of gold. Yesterday
morning Wm. Watt and A. B. Dibble, Esqrs, went up to Starrville to view the raw town and they will
probably have the streets properly laid out. We understand that in Starrville no pedro will be allowed
to be played.
“SWING LOW SWEET CHARIOT.”—The Tennessee Jubilee Singers are billed to appear in this
town on Wednesday and Thursday of next week, May 30th and 31st. They will have splendid houses.
EXPECTED.—It is expected that Col. Bob Ingersoll, the Illinois orator, will visit Grass Valley in
a few days. He may deliver a lecture here, and if he does he will have a crowded house. His lectures
are not, we believe, on political subjects, nor are they neutral in religion.
THURSDAY, MAY 24, 1877
BORN. At Truckee, May 17, 1877, to WM. CURLESS and Wife, a Son.
At Boca, May 18, 1877, to JOS. GRUBER and Wife, a Son.
SUCCESSFUL ENTERTAINMENT.—The strawberry festival at Hamilton Hall given by the
ladies of the Congregational Church, Tuesday night, was a very pleasant and successful affair.
Singing and pantomimes and sweet strawberries and cream, and pleasant and handsome ladies
always make a success of a social gathering.
Personal.
Curley & Mahon, of Colfax, will receive their friends to-night, and the pleasantest party of the
season will come off. The moon light ride through picturesque scenery will be greatly enjoyed. We
expect that a large company will go down from Nevada city and Grass Valley.
SATURDAY, MAY 26, 1877
SUCCESSFUL EXCURSION.—The moonlight excursion to Colfax, on Thursday night, was a
splendid success. Over five hundred went down from Nevada and Grass Valley. They had music all
the way down and back, rendered by the Thomas’ Silver Cornet Band, and at Colfax they had several
