130 JULY 13 & 14, 1877 GRASS VALLEY UNION BERKELEY GYMNASIUM.—We call attention to the advertisement of the Berkeley Gymnasium. Students can be prepared in that school for entrance into the University of California, or any other college or university. THE Berkeley Gymnasium, A Preparatory School in the UNIVERSITY. Accommodations for Boarders, First Class. REFERENCES. John LeConte, M.D., President of University, Ca. Eugene W. Hilgard, Ph. D., Prof. Agriculture, University, Cal. Bernard Moses, Ph. D., Prof. History, University, Cal. Martin Kellogg, A.M., Prof. Latin, University, Cal. Willard B. Rising, Ph. D., Prof. Chemistry, University, Cal. JOHN P BURRIS, Principal. Berkeley, Cal. SATURDAY, JULY 14, 1877 Board of Supervisors—July Term. THURSDAY, July 12, 1877. Board met pursuant to adjournment; present G. G. Allan, A. B. Brady, Wm. M. Nutter and J. S. Thompson; G. G. Allan, President of the Board presiding. ... In the matter of the petition of certain citizens of Hunt’s Hill and vicinity, asking the acceptance of a certain road, described as follows” Commencing near Mr. McCloud’s and A. G. Turner’s houses, and running thence north and northwest to the toll road, being 114 miles in length, and situate in Little York Township. The same having been recommended by Supervisor Thompson, it is on motion ordered that said road be, and it is hereby accepted and declared a public highway In the matter of the verbal petition of Henry Stehr, for renewal of license to collect tolls on the Chalk Bluff turnpike at the same rates as last year, the petition was granted. On motion of Supervisor Knotwell it was ordered that the Road Commissioner of each district be, and he is hereby authorized and instructed to have suitable guide-boards put up at all the necessary points in his district. .. . CAMPAIGN MEETINGS.—The Nevada Transcript gives the following suggestive item, which we are inclined to approve. During the campaign there will be many public meetings at Grass Valley and this city. Excursion trains will be run for those who desire to attend. The matter of charging 25 cents per head for the round trip to Grass Valley, and vice versa, is talked of by those who have had to foot the bills for the trains heretofore. We think it would a good idea, as it would be the means of preventing many who go for the sake of the ride, and crowding out those who want to attend the meetings. A 25 cents tax would not hurt anybody on such an occasion, and if the Republicans and Democratic Central Committees have an understanding about it which we presume they will, the new arrangement will go into effect as soon as the meetings are commenced. HOT.—Yesterday was another hot day. The thermometer in our office stood at 98, with an upward tendency. A dull Friday and a hot thermometer are not assistants in getting up anything like a good local column for a newspaper. The weather sharps say that to-day will be nice and breezy and there will be no more hot weather after to-day for the remainder of the Summer. It makes a man think, on such a day as yesterday, about getting his Winter’s supply of wood.
