136 JULY 24-27, 1877 GRASS VALLEY UNION
DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.—Last Friday a fire got started in the fields and woods in the Lime Kiln
neighborhood. A number of fences were burned and crops in fields were destroyed. The sufferers
were Mrs. Reese, Henry Bickford, Reed and Steve Walworth. It was difficult to save barns and
residences, but the neighbors all turned out and fought the fire with the sole view of saving houses,
saving fences was an impossibility. The fire originated from a coal accidentally dropped by a boy who
was carrying a “chunk of fire” out into a field. These are dry times, and a fire started in a town or in
the country is likely to prove extensive and destructive before it gets through with its work.

INDIAN SPRINGS CAMP MEETING.—The camp meeting at Indian Springs will continue next
Sunday, the 29th instant. There will be communion and a love feast on next Sunday. The meeting is
becoming more interesting every day, the minister in charge having received valuable and eloquent
assistance. The roads to the Springs are all in excellent condition, and a drive to the campgrounds
will be pleasant, and may prove profitable. All are invited to attend.
THE FOOTRACE.~—It only costs $150 to go to see that footrace between two young ladies.
Indeed one may make money on the trip by meeting some deluded Placer County fellow and getting
him to bet on the Placer county young lady. Miss Amburg, of Nevada county, is going to get away
with the race.
DULL AT TRUCKEE.—The lumber shipping business at Truckee seems to be very dull. The
Republican of the 24th says: “Mr. Champion, the railroad agent of this place, informs us that there
has been one—whole car—of lumber, shipped from here during the past two months, and the receipts
of his office are less that one-fourth of what has heretofore been other years.”
