185 OCTOBER 3 & 5, 1877 GRASS VALLEY UNION
of plank arrangements. In this town no one wants to return to the planking system. Grass
Valley has tried both kinds, and holds to the stone.
The Placer Herald says: “Last Saturday two Chinamen as we are informed, visited the old
Wheeler place’ about four miles from Colfax, on the Grass Valley wagon road, now occupied by Mr.
James Faulkner, at one time keeper of the Half-Way House, between Grass Valley and Nevada city,
and finding Mrs. Faulkner alone in the house, attempted to outrage her. Mrs. F. is a rather muscular
lady and brave withal, and fought the devils with all her might, but in spite of her resistance they
succeeded in stripping her clothes from her body, when Mr. Faulkner, who happened to be only a
few hundred yards from the house, overheard her cries for help and came rushing to her assistance.
At the sight of a man the Celestial fiends took to their heels, and, before Mr. Faulkner had time to
realize the devilish nature of their visit, they were out of sight and to our knowledge have not been
heard of since. This is one of the boldest attempt that we have had any account of, on the part of
the Chinese to invade the sanctity of white man’s household, and for downright fiendishness is only
second in its nature to the horrible tragedy that occurred at Rocklin just one week previous.”
OBSTRUCTING THE ROAD.—Last Friday some fellow placed a hammer on the railroad
track at Gold Run trestle. The hammer was so placed as to throw the train from the track, but
was fortunately discovered by the section hands of the road. The [Central] Railroad Company
have a standing reward of three hundred dollars for the arrest and conviction of any one placing
obstructions on the track. Some one can make money by watching the road.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1877
WILD.—A Washington telegram advances a very wild scheme. An appropriation of $50,000
will be asked of Congress to make a preliminary survey for a railway from the Republic of Liberia
eastward one or two thousand miles into the interior of the rich and populous Soudan [sic] and
to report upon the country, its population, climate, productions and the practicability of such
road when, if favorable, efforts will be made with view of extending colonization, commerce and
civilization over the vast interior.
A large order has been received by a mica concern in New York for plates of mica to go to China.
The Chinese use these plates, which are about seven inches square, for idolatrous purposes. They
paint upon them the likeness of their divinities, and reverently adore the same. These particular ones
are to be used for household decoration and devotion. They are considered quite stylish among the
better class of Chinese.
In addition to the home production, opium is imported into China to the value of over
$40,000,000 principally from British India. More than $100,000 worth is annually imported into
California for the use of the Chinese in this State.
Persons and Things
The Nevada Transcript does not believe that Senator Sargent will take up the practice of law
in Washington City, after the expiration of his term as Senator. We think the Transcript is
correct.
Now is the time to ask your girl to go to the dance, which is to come off Wednesday night next;
the admission will only be $1 for gentlemen, and the ladies, of course, will go on their good
looks, which is right. Beauty and chivalry will be there.
