188 OCTOBER 7, 9, 10, 1877 GRASS VALLEY UNION The road was surveyed by John Ostrum, and was quickly and substantially built, mainly under the superintendence of George D. Roberts; but every one of the stockholders did part of the bossing, as was the custom in those days. The road paid well at first, and has ever since, as far as the writer of this has any knowledge. The three first named incorporators are dead, and of the remaining three one, Geo. D. Roberts is in San Francisco, engaged in the business of fighting tide water off the tule lands, and Bosworth and the writer of this are in Grass Valley, the one accommodating people, and being the subject of their growls, at the Post-office; the other writing such screeds as this for a living and for the want of a better business. We don’t know how George feels about it but it is quite certain that Bosworth and this writer do not feel as if they could now give, after the lapse of the twenty years, many short line toll roads to Nevada county. There is not much of a moral to this short story, but it is well enough to observe that twenty years make a considerable item in the lifetime of a man, and that often times fair prospects are not realized. Young man! Be saving; put your dimes away; do not take stock in the shares of mines that you know nothing about and cannot assist in managing, and, above all, never dream of taking stock in the next war. LECTURES.—The people of North San Juan are having a series of lectures and among those announced to speak we observe the name of Hon. A. B. Dibble of Grass Valley. His lecture will take place on the 24th of this month and the subject will be the “Power of the Will.” The proceeds of the lecture will be given to the Public School Library of San Juan. The people of that place will have a rare treat in listening to that lecture as Mr. Dibble is one of the finest speakers in the State and always treats a subject that he handles in an original and able manner. Preaching in the M. E. Church to day at 10:50 A.M. and 7 P.M., by Rev. W. R. Gober, pastor. Subject in the morning: “The Straight Gate,” and in the evening: “The Word that Saves.” LECTURE.—Past Grand Master Barnes, I.0.0.F., of New York, will deliver a lecture at Hamilton Hall, on Thursday evening, October 11th, 1877. Mr. Barnes is a splendid talker, and all are invited to go and hear him. Admittance free. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1877 BORN. At Grass Valley, October 6, 1877, to SAMUEL WHITING and Wife, a Daughter. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon, the 11th instant, at 2 o’clock, from the family residence, on Gold Hill. Services at the M. E. Church. Persons and Things W. W. Hobart, formerly of Grass Valley, will surely be the Republican nominee for Governor of Nevada. He ought to be a Democrat, and he has all the symptoms of that kind of politics. Mr. M. H. Savage, late Principal of the Good Templar’s Home for Orphans at Vallejo, is in town arranging for a concert by the celebrated McGibeny Family for whom he is agent. This troupe
