21 JANUARY 25, 1877 GRASS VALLEY UNION
THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 1877
ACCIDENT IN THE IDAHO MINE.—Yesterday morning, about day light, an accident occurred
in the Idaho mine, which caused Stephen Richards to lose his left arm. He was working, as we
understand it, in the shaft, when a plank of piece of timber fell from some point above him, striking
his arm a little below the shoulder joint. The bones of the arm were broken into fine pieces by the
force of the blow, and the flesh was badly torn. Drs. Jones and McCormick seeing that there was no
chance to save the arm at once proceeded to amputate it. The operation was successfully performed,
dr. Harris administering the chloroform. The patient rallied well after the operation and there is
no reason to fear any fatal result, although the hurt is a very bad one, and the nervous shock must
have been very great. The wounded man is a well known and most excellent miner. He has a family
depending on him for support, which makes his misfortune all the greater.
ELOQUENCE AND LOGIC.—Next Saturday night, at Hamilton Hall, there will be an
entertainment. A reading of the programme shows that logic, elegantly and eloquently put forth, will
be plenty in that Hall on that occasion. All who attend will have a chance to make up their minds
whether women should be allowed to vote. The question is now before Congress as a constitutional
amendment.
