231 DECEMBER 16, 18-20, 1877 GRASS VALLEY UNION
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1877
NO SENATOR YET.
The Democratic caucus have balloted industriously this week at Sacramento for a Senator, but
so far without a definite result. The last balloting shows Farley to be gradually gaining in strength,
and the opinion prevails that he will finally receive the nomination. .. .
The Nevada County Senators have been appointed to important Senate Committees. Judge
Searls is Chairman of the Committee on Corporations, and also a member of the Committee on
Mines and Mining and Federal Relations. Mr. Coleman is Chairman of the Committee on Mines and
Mining and a member of the Committee on Internal Improvements and Agriculture.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT SMARTSVILLE. The Marysville Appeal says that an aged citizen of
Smartsville, named James Cranshaw was thrown from his wagon on Saturday in front
of the “Excelsior Store” and received injuries from which he died a few hours after the
accident. The deceased was a native of England, and 69 years of age. [The] Telegram gave
no further particulars of the sad affair.
RAINFALL.—The gauge at Loutzenheiser’s drug store, recorded a fall of 0.15 inch, for the 24
hours ending at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. This gives us 5.14 inches for the season.
Persons and Things.
R. Shoemaker, Secretary of the Senate, Jas. K. Byrne, Arthur Hagadorn, George Philips, V. G.
Bell, George McLain, Wm. Hamilton, J. P. Hickey, and several other gentlemen have been in
town for a day or two making social or business visits. The above are all welcome visitors and
have met with a cordial reception, and have divided the honors with the rain which seemed to
come with them, and which at this writing promises to stay with us for a few days.
The Transcript has seen a drunken Chinaman staggering on the streets of Nevada—an unusual
occurrence. Of the many objections to “John,” the vice of drunkenness is not one of them>
Many Chinese, however, will stupefy themselves smoking opium. And this reminds us that we
have heard that a Chinese opium den exists in Grass Valley, to which white people resort. Is
this true?
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1877
Hon. James T. Farley, of Amador county, was nominated for U.S. Senator, by the Democratic
caucus on Monday evening, on the twenty-fourth ballot. The struggle for the position was warmly
contested all of last week by Farley, Ryland, McDonald and Hager, but it was evident at the final
ballot, on Friday evening last, that Farley would prove the victor, as his vote continued to steadily
increase, and the withdrawal of Ryland, on Saturday, virtually settled the contest in Farley’s favor.
Mr. Farley will succeed Senator Sargent, and will take his seat in Congress in 1879. He has had
much legislative experience; possesses a great deal of willpower; and has the ability to make a good
Representative. He has always maintained a character for purity as a legislator, and we doubt not
that he will keep his reputation untarnished in his new sphere
