1 JANUARY 1, 1879 GRASS VALLEY UNION WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1, 1879 BORN. At Grass Valley, December 29, 1878, to JAS. MITCHELL and Wife, a Daughter. DIED. At Grass Valley, December 31, 1878, GEORGE, son of Henry and Clementina Fuchs, aged 20 days. Funeral from the family residence, corner of Auburn and Richardson streets, at 2 o'clock P.M. to=day. Near Rough and Ready, December 31, 1878, PATRICK MURPHY, aged 58 years, 7 months and 10 days, a native of Ireland. The funeral will take place from his late residence, on the Rough and Ready road, near Rough and Ready, at 117 o'clock P.M., to-day. Religious services at St. Patrick’s Church at 3 o'clock. Death of an Old Resident. Patrick Murphy, an old resident of Nevada county, died yesterday, at his home, on the Rough and Ready road, of pneumonia, after a brief illness. He was a man held in high esteem by his acquaintances for his many excellent qualities. He was a miner by occupation, and had followed the business for a number of years in the vicinity of Rough and Ready. He was an unmarried man. No Paper To-morrow. For the reason that the opening day of the New Year is always kept as a holiday, when as far as possible all secular employments are given up, the UNION will not appear to-morrow. Scissors and Pen. Dr. O’Donnell is back in his seat in the Convention, ready to be investigated. He was voted out of the Workingmen’s party, by resolution, at the weekly sand lot meeting last Sunday. The Bank of California has issued the following notice to its depositors: “The distinction between Gold and Currency will close after the ist of January, 1879. Depositors will please send in currency books to be written up.” All drafts on New York after the 1st of January will be drawn in dollars and the collector will have to take gold or currency, at the option of the banks. Secretary Sherman says of the gold reserve: “For some time we have been receiving gold in exchange for greenbacks, and, although we have already paid out nearly $20,000,000 in gold to meet demands for January interest at the Sub-Treasuries, there has been no diminution of the gold reserve in the Treasury.” The Citizens’ Relief Committee of Memphis have wound up their affairs by distributing the cash on hand, $7,253, among the poor white orphan asylums, and setting aside $1,003 for a colored asylum, if it had be organized. Josefa Peters, an Indian woman, who was supposed be he over 124 years old, died at San Luis Rey, San Diego county, on the 23d instant. The Reason, The Transcript explains as the reason why Supervisor Huckins continues to hold the office of Constable of Bridgeport Township, that he desired to collect a large number of poll taxes under garnishment, which could not well be reached by any one else. This accomplished he expects to resign the constableship, which it is reported he will do at the next meeting of the Supervisors, which occurs on Monday next. Persons and Things. Egg-nog at the Exchange Hotel today from 10 until 1 o’clock. The dance given by the Young Men’s Social Club of Nevada city, will take place to-night at Hunt’s Hall, in that place, and the floor will be canvassed for the occasion and the best of
