257 SEPTEMBER 14, 1886 GRASS VALLEY UNION
A Fickle Lover and a Despondent Maiden Who Takes Poison.
It is an old saying that woman’s sorrow can usually be attributed to the perfidy of man.
The truthfulness of this adage is again verified in the sad experience of Miss Sadie Mclntosh
of this place.
Four months ago Miss Mclntosh, an attractive woman of some nineteen summers, made
the acquaintance of Joseph Rose. He was a boarder at the hotel in which Miss Saddie has
for a good while been employed as a waitress. Rose paid assidous court to the young lady
and soon gained her hand and heart. The fickle lover placed upon the finger of his betrothed
an engagement ring, and the wedding was set for this week. On Tuesday morning Rose
left for Downieville, obstensibly on the happy mission of procuring a marriage license,
promising the prospective bride that he would return to her the same day. Not returning,
inquiries were instituted and it was soon ascertained that he had unceremoniously taken
his departure from Downieville for the lower country in furtherance of a well-laid plan to
escape his obligation.
Upon being informed of the facts the betrayed girl became prostrated with grief and
attempted to end her existence. She called upon Dr. Spedding Tuesday afternoon and
asked for 25 cents worth of laudanum. She stated that she was to be married that evening
and that with the laudanum she wished to alleviate the pain of a corn from which she was
suffering. The Doctor, not having heard of the girl’s disappointment, and seeing nothing in
her demeanor to arouse his suspicions, gave her the drug. Shortly after she left the Doctor’s
office he went up to the postoffice, where he heard of Sadie’s troubles. He immediately
rushed down to her room, and in company with others who were in the room, began a
search for the bottle of poison. It was finally found where she had concealed it on her
person.
Our citizens are very indignant over the matter, and a warrant is out for Rose’s arrest.

Persons and Things.
The atmosphere is filled with smoke caused by the late extensive forest fires. A strong wind or
rain to clear the skies of the smoke would be acceptable.
A number of the young bloods of the town were engaged in artistic work on Saturday night—
painting the skies red.
Frank Ederman will proceed in the rebuilding of the Stumpf Hotel as soon as the insurance
companies adjust his loss by fire.
Glenbrook Academy.
The Nevada Herald of Saturday says the organization of an association for founding the
academy was perfected.
The name of the association is the Nevada County Academy Association; the capital stock
$10,000, and the location of the academy Glenbrook Park. The directors are J. T. Morgan,
W. H. Crawford, Geo. M. Hughes, of Nevada City; and Geo. Lord, Ed. Coleman, and one
more yet to be selected of Grass Valley. The founding of the academy is a settled fact.
