4 JANUARY 5 & 6, 1886 GRASS VALLEY UNION A petition has been numerously signed asking District Attorney Long to remove his Deputy, W. H. Hughes, on the ground of incompetency. Jerome Deasy, said to be a U. S. Deputy Marshal, has been arrested at Truckee on the charge of “disturbing the peace,” in talking loudly on the streets against the leaders of the Anti-Chinese movement. Personal. Dwight Crittenden was in town yesterday and met many old acquaintances who gave cordial greeting. He was just down from Washington township and expressed a favorable opinion of tbs quartz mines of that section. Superior Court. The following business was transacted in Superior Court on Saturday, Hon. J. M. Walling presiding: People vs. M. B. Siddles, Arraignment. Plea of not guilty. People vs. G. Giacommella. Demurrer to information overruled and defendant pleaded not guilty. People vs. A. W. Anderson. Arraigned for assault with a deadly weapon. Entered plea of simple assault. Judgment set for Monday, January 4th. Jones vs. Hussey. Demurrer overruled and 25 days to answer, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 1886 [DIED] Our townsman Wm. F. Barger, who has been ill for some months, from a disease of the heart, deceased on Monday night about 9 o'clock. For some weeks previous to his death he suffered at times greatly, and frequently his demise was expected at any hour. Mr. Barger was an old resident of the county, coming from Illinois, settling at North San Juan in the year 1855. At the time of the mining discoveries in Washoe he went to that region, and for some years was engaged in mining operations on the Comstock, and subsequently in the Eastern portion of the State of Nevada. From thence he returned to this county, resuming his residence at San Juan, but subsequently removed to Grass Valley, where he has been a resident for twelve or fifteen years. He was a man of a correct and unassuming life, and numbered many friends in the community. He leaves a wife and daughter ten years of age. He was a native of Illinois, and in the fifty-third year of age. He was a member of Manzanita Lodge, F. & A. M. at North San Juan, and also of Highland Lodge, A. O. U. W. of this place, The funeral of deceased will take place from the family residence on Church street to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, and will be conducted by the Masonic fraternity. Persons and Things. The days and nights continue clear and cold. The highest and lowest register of the thermometer in twenty-four hours yesterday was 27° and 42°. The Sac. Bee says a dealer in that city received an order last week from Truckee Chinamen for a dozen of Colt’s big revolvers. This looks like preparation to stand off the whites in case of a collision. The new lessees of the Slate Range mine have their new steam hoisting works completed and in good shape, and are now pushing the underground work energetically. There is good milling ore in sight. The lead of the Extension Mine, Forest City, is 260 feet wide, and the gravel from the latest upraise, near the face of the maintained, averaged over $5 a carload.
