JANUARY 7 & 8, 1886 GRASS VALLEY UNION The Board of Supervisors will consider Road matters to-day as relating to toll roads and bridges. Ice is reported to be fourteen inches at Prosser Creek, and the ice men expect to gather the largest crop ever known. Jerome Deasy, U. S. Deputy Marshal, was convicted in Justice’s Court at Truckee in five minutes for disturbing the peace. J. B. Gray of Nevada City has been granted a life diploma by the State Board of Education. Ou the 13th inst. the Probate Court will consider a petition for the final distribution of the proceeds of the estate of Joseph Schlotthauer, deceased. Some of the small service pipes were frozen Tuesday night. A good job is being done on Main street hill. A little money spent in work on that hill now will save a good deal in the end. Wm. K. Spencer has received the Life of Grant, and all can now be supplied with the book. The roads are getting to be very good. It was very pleasant on the sunny side of the street yesterday. Social Hop. There will be a Social Hop at the Town Talk House on Saturday evening, January 9th, to which all are invited. Music by Becket & Martin. * Personal. Peter Purdon, proprietor of the Purdon bridge and turnpike over the South Yuba, was in town yesterday. FRIDAY, JANUARY 8, 1886 Native Sons’ Installation. The following officers of Nevada City Parlor, No. 56, N, S. G. W. were installed Tuesday evening by District Deputy L. B. Johnson: President, E. F. Rosenthal; 1st V. P., L. S. Calkins; 2d V. P., W. T. Morgan; 3d V. P., F. T. Nilon; K. S., Geo. D, Black; Asst. K. S., Marcus Baruh; F. S., C. H. Hanson; T. J., B. Gray; M., Jas. Grimes; L. G., L. Kendrick; O. G., L. D. Nihell; D. E. Morgan, P. P. Persons and Things. The higest and lowest register of the thermometer yesterday was 25° and 50°. Tha funeral of the late Wm. F. Barger was largely attended yesterday. Philip Roach, a Truckee larcenist, has just served out a six months term in the county jail. Geo. E. Marshall of Truckee has been advised by District Attorney Long that he will appoint him as his Deputy for that place. The themometer registered 6° above zero at Truckee last Friday night—being the coldest night of the Winter. Truckee Republican: Despite the warning of the citizens, it is thought that many Chinamen will refuse to leave the woods by Jan. 15. The citizens refuse to be responsible for their safety after that date. Marshal Drew states that he will revoke the commission of Deputy United States Marshal Jerome Deasy of Truckee, [who was] arrested by the police of that burg for disturbing the peace, and convicted of that offense. The Auburn Republic says: There were ripe oranges at Newcastle six weeks ago, which appears to be six months earlier than the Riverside orange reaches its prime.
